    7mm something.....

So - I have a T3 in 2506 not being used, put it up at a very cost effective buy for someone on here, but no, just too damn tight around here. Just happen to have a 7mm08 Savage barrel that didn't sell either.

New plan, Savage barrel ( 22" ) will turn down to T3 tenon spec, so maybe I fit it to the T3 and it will be a 7mm08 with long mag and bolt stop straight off the bat.
But - because it's a Savage, reaming for an alternate chamber is drama free, but what, and why?
    7mm Mauser imp? .284 Win?, .280 Rem, 280 Rem imp, 7mm PRC, 7mm mag?

Just so happens I have 7mm08 dies, cases and 130 120gn NBT's, maybe a good place to start, but I'm open to debate on cartridge and pill.

    I've H4831, 2209, IMR4895, IMR4320 and Superformance on the shelf

Maybe do it to sell, maybe as a standard hunting gun, maybe a dedicated long range rig. How well would it behave in whatever given role? Do I leave it in 25/06 cause it is just such a good 400yd lights out killer of deer? (117 Interlock at 3150)

So many questions on a pissing down wet Mackenzie Sunday.

keep it as a 25/06. Vastly underrated calibre.
    Unsophisticated... AF!

It depends on how you intend to use the rifle & how far you want to shoot. Bush bashing leave at 708 & chop bbl to 16in & capable out to 400-500yds with the right projectiles & accuracy. If you wanted further then 284 or 280ai. The 284 would be my pick because you could chop bbl back to 20 or perhaps 18in and retain terminal performance out to 6-700yds. 280ai I’d leave it 22in. Magnums I’d give them a miss given your starting components

Going from the 20tpi of the savage thread to 16 tpi of the tikka thread might not be that great at all and you end ruining your barrel. Sell it to another savage lover and get a second hand tikka barrel in 7-08. Custom guns in Invercargill might have something for you.
It will be way simpler. As to your 25-06 barrel if it has plenty of life left and a clean rifling you should easily get 150$ for it at least.

284 Win I agree, you clearly know how to hand load, have suitable pills, powder (2209 and super performance) long action mag and bolt stop etc. Works perfect in Tikka action. Go for it

This is a Sunday afternoon amusement thread. After I had this cup of tea I’ll never think about it again.

If you dont make much use of a 25-06 and you didnt want a 7mm08 either, how are we to know ? If you’re planing to sell it on, make something vanilla like 7mm08 if you think you can get it to work then you’ll have a sort of second class 7mm08 tikka for sale. A standard 280 rem would make better use of the current bolt and mag setup but youd likely get more by selling it as is original in 25-06.

Or sell/ bubba whatever you’re using instead of the 25-06 now. How are we to know ?

    7mm SWC.
Not because I think it's the best but because I find it interesting and want someone else to be the guinea pig.

Why is it that 25-06s are so hard to sell, there's usually a Tikka example on the shelf of a LGS at a giveaway price, weird cause it's a bloody good smacker . ...

Ammo maybe not that common, and since the 6.5 creedmoor is taking over a good chunk of the market and appeal more to the new generation of shooters/hunters that might be why Sako/ tikka is leaving it aside.

284w would be my choice if your going to keep it. Probably limited market/not cost effective as selling proposition.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.
