    7mm08 to.284

Hey team just pondering this after a few beers.
Quite keen on a .284 as a 1 rifle suits all needs to replace my 308.
Would it be better to rebarrel my tikka to a 284 or buy a 7mm08 and get a gunsmith to ream out the existing barrel?
Looking at what the cost is if anyone knows for both or either.
    Cheers

Do not want a 30-06. Thinking a 0-500m+ rifle with a short action(if i step away from tikka). Those 7mm 162gr SSTs have a BC of 550~ which will help with the longer stuff. End of the day probably cheaper and better idea to out a more capable scope on my 308 haha

The rebarrel would be cheaper as you already have the donor rifle, then just need a long action magazine and bolt stop. Buying a 7mm-08 you still need the bolt stop and magazine anyway.

Haha - you could ream your 308 to 30-284, which would give you a short action 30-06 equivalent (to drive long high BC boollits at reasonable velocities) and spend a fortune on dies etc

Just use a stock 7mm08, 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor, if you want to stick with a short action.
Or as you said just stick with the 308 and work up a decent load for it.

The SAUM might be better in short action. I've got a Winnie that the magazine is modded to 3.1 length which is mint with shorter bullets at around 3.0 COAL. If I load the longer fellas to mag feed I get early pressure...these go mint longer out as a single feed. Bit of a faff....I could be wrong but I think the modded winnie is the longer of the short action mags.
I would do a reamed tikka.
Rem mag would be awesome though a bit more vicious to shoot.

Could your 308 be reamed out to 300 SAUM? That'd be another interesting proposition.

for the money you are going to spend changing you could do all the same with what you already have..... 500+ you are going to need to dial up so need good scope and rangefinder. given you have both of those the .308 will do it just as easy, there is article floating around somewhere about guy using .308 with crazy short barrel (10" I think it was) and he shooting deer out to 5-600 yards....... you will have damn sight better velocity and trajectory than that.... something super slippery like a 165grn something or other for out long and say a 180 grn for up close..... any other money you saved can go into chopper flight in somewhere. get the war dept to approove funds then change mind and go with what you have and funds are there for play.....lol. best buy her weekend at spa or somesuch to keep her sweet.
