A few weeks ago.
Running shot at 80y offhand. Model 7 in 7mm08 is easily my go to rifle. Just chronied my load through a lab radar today and it's a 160gr TMK doing 2385fps from the 16" barrel. Basically a recoiless rifle.
My poor 308 has shot only 2 deer this year and my 7mm08 7 deer. Nice to see 7mm projectiles available again!
One day u will see the advantages of 6.5 142 gr spears
High bc bullets
I've tried virtually every calibre
6.5 does everything I need it to do short from teethy clawy tusky things in africa
No worries, I'd all but forgotten my question. I got to around 2600 using 2209 but it was a bit hot so have settled on a load that chronys at around 2500
I'm now playing with some 120's that I picked up the other day as the the bigger bullets can be a bit ruthless on smaller deer. 2900 seems to be the limit in my 20 inch barrel with those.
Greetings again,
One powder I have had good results with in the 7mm-08 is AR2208. In a 19 inch barrel 42.5 grains of AR2208 and the 140 grain Remington Corelokt chronographed a little over 2,700 fps. Hodgdon offers different data for the 139 grain Hornady and the 140 grain Swift which is a longer and harder projectile. The former is more appropriate for the Corelokt. 41.5 grains of AR2208 and the 150 grain Remington Corelokt chronographed just under 2,600 fps. Once again Hodgdon offers two sets of data for the 150 grain and the Sierra data is more appropriate for most projectiles that have a lead core.
A word of caution regarding AR2209. Current lots seem to be significantly faster those from before 2,000 so loads need to be treated with some caution. This includes the current Hodgdon data. You will likely lose about 100 fps with your 20 inch barrel from 24 inch data so assuming that you are still using AR2209 2,900 fps sounds about right.
Regards Grandpamac.
Didn't seem to make to much difference to max velocity with either 2208, 2209, 4451, or Staball 6.5 with the 162's. anything near 2600 was showing pressure and groups opening up. 2500 fps seemed to give best groups and interestingly 4451 gave the best sd's.
Unfortunately I'd have better luck picking winning lotto numbers than predicting when a certain powder will be available again and I don't have a lot of 4451 left.
40.0 of 2208 is giving me 2550 with the 162's so that's my load with those.
Using the Staball for the 120's as I have some to use. 52.0 gave 2920, 52.5 gave 2930 but showing pressure.
Accuracy wise I get around an inch give or take .2 with most combinations. I guess that's what it is so time to just go shooting:thumbsup:
I really rated my 7mm-08 and it’s what I recommend to new shooters chasing their first deer. Ended up going to a 308 only because of ammo availability and price. At some stage will get another 7mm-08 though, so nice to shoot with reduced recoil but still the stopping power for pretty much anything in NZ, unless you’re maybe shooting long distances and need bigger cartridges.

This fallow yearling still managed to run 50 yards.
Front on shot through the neck and out it's left side.
No more 162's on fallow for me.
Just aim for lungs on smaller deer. I’ve found the younger animals can take a few steps while full body reds have all been bang flops when targeting high shoulders.
162s leave an impressive blood trail so who cares if they run.

This is my shortened Remington 700 in 7mm08, good little kaimai killer. I'm moving to a town under the ruahines soon though so might need to get something that pushes a 7mm pill abit further.
Wash your mouth out boy
Had a family member ask if I had some spare venison
Well now I do.

Model 7 just works again.
We run 110 TTSX in our Tikka 7-08's with 20" barrel, 3400 fps, pretty aggressive up close, have used out past 300 to great effect, no recoil, no lead, good times :)
Another unlucky character.
Belmont 139gr sst. Dropped dead instantly at 60yards. Hole behind shoulder is exit hole. 20mm of fat on legs.

Anyone shooting berger168s? Is there any significant velocity to be gained over 162eldm?

Entry and exit at 380m
My main one is great with 120BT's. Accurate, going 2930avg out of a 16.5" barrel and they hit hard.
Ironically it's my cheapest (and first) rifle, but if I'm going hunting, it's the one I grab most often. Shot reds and fallow from 19m to 260m.
Angled forward into vitals of a heavy bodied stag.
280m
No exit but vitals were soup behind the offside leg.

Covered some ground lately with a very tidy Sako 75 Finnlight
The 140 nbt @2900fps lays Sika down no problem

Defiance action that was destined to be a 22gt but then my 22-204 fill in rifle done so well I changed over to the 708 16” 8twist bartlien 2b same manners stock you handled triggertech trigger Hawkins bottom metal Wyatt’s follower and spring loading somewhat long at 2,935 for 2610 with the 150lrab and a nice little 30mm vx3HD kaimai suppressor it’s an absolute pleasure to use
Shot my first Chamois with mine a month ago.
I'll have to leave you hanging as it'll be in the roar issue of rod n rifle.
Just started with Barnes 120gn tipped triple shocks. 3 from 3 now with devastating terminal performance. Here’s a hind shot the other night at around 60-70 yds - entry
