7mm08 will be fine, do it all the time , ammo is cheaper too
Just be aware with wars etc going on that a 308 maybe a better option for getting ammo

I do not really see the reason why somebody would want to use a magnum calibre for <350m.
7mm08 OR 308 (much better ammo availability) would make more sense for this application imho.
NOTE: with the right reloads/ammunition, and shooting capability(skill) even a 308 would be capable of shots beyond the 350m if need be. If you cant hit a target @350m reliably with a 308 a magnum will not do you any good.
On the contrary, more expensive, more powder, more recoil, less barrel life...

Get the 7mm-08. Much less drama to load for and more than adequate for 350 metres. Any of the other cartridges of that capacity from the 6.5's up to the .308 would be just as good.

A 7-08 or 6.5 is all you need at those close ranges.

Inside 500meters, all you need is a 7mm08 but don't look past the 6.5creed either. There is more factory ammo avaliable.
I've got a 7mmRemMag as well as numerous other 7mm rifles, it hardly gets used.
My 7mm08 and 7mmCreed are used alot, the 284win and 7mmRM not so much
7mm08 is a more than capable caliber @ those ranges and some, ammo got really hard to find a couple of years ago but is pretty good now.
Or cut the difference with a good 270 :thumbsup:
More than capable to 400 with the likes of 145 gr eldx.
Otherwise 308 for factory ammo availability given the current state of global affairs.
Seems like a strange choice of two calibres, but yes, of the two, 7mm08.

Honestly, the first question I always ask my customers is, what type of hunting do you intend to do?
Bush, farmland or open/ distance stuff?
What is your realistic maximum range you intend to shoot an animal and how big of an animal.
Then we decide on the caliber and the rifle best suited for the task from the answers to the questions above.
If my hunting life consisted of shots around at 300 metres I would get the 7mm Remington Magnum, and if I was usually hunting open tussock like in Otago and had designs on the wapiti blocks or tahr hunting, I would become quite enthusiastic about the big seven.
That is what the7mm Rem Mag was designed for. If you're in Invercargill and want to hunt these places, the 7mm Remington Magnum is a wise choice.
The downsides are, the rifles are usually heavier, the ammo is more expensive, and the 7mm RM shines with longer barrels - 26 inches would be best. So there is no point suppressing one, should you be thinking about that.
The 7mm08 I think of as a general purpose workhorse; the 7mm Remington Magnum is a more specialised tool.
There is no need for the extra Recoil and Blast of the 7mm Mag if your not shooting past 400-450 .
Short action for the 7mm 08 as opposed to the Long action for the Magnum , so a little bit lighter potentially and shorter/Handier Rifle.
Ammo is expensive these days no mater what you use , but in reality the 7mm08 will work out cheaper by a fraction over time .
I don’t know your shooting experience, but in equal Rifles I would bet money that you will shoot the 7mm08 better purely because of the lesser recoil .
If Recoil isn’t a problem to you , then you could go down the ultra light path with the 7mm08 and still shoot it well , try doing that with a 7mm Mag and see how the fillings in your teeth like being rattled every time you press the trigger :thumbsup:
Disclaimer- I hate being beaten up by a Rifle and will always choose the lesser recoiling option which I know for a fact I will shoot better/more accurately.
No factory Ammo for .284 is there....if not you have to reload then there are isses with consumables...primer, powder, projectiles, brass.....so maybe not best option...i did also think that but struggle myself with consumablesQuote:

go the ONLY true 7mm and get a .270w always ammunition in shops,more than capable out to that range and beyond if you rangefinding and dialing (same for anything past 350) and just because its a great round.
if you look at the NZHunter thread you will even see Greg D singing its praise (might be through gritted teeth mind LOL)
Just get both and for the 270 fans one, one of those too.
