Advice on a future new rifle please

Ok so I have seen how some of these threads go so I will try and ask the right questions and give as much information as I can.

I’m looking at getting a target / hunting rifle capable of 600m maximum in the next 6 months or so and would like to call on the forums brain trust on rifle suggestions. I am edging towards a 308 as I enjoy load development and there is such a range of gear out there. It will end up being suppressed rather than braked unless there is overwhelming benefits of a break. Main game will be fellow but occasionally will chase pigs and reds.

I have owned a 270 previously so not interested in another. I am looking at spending about $1200 on rifle and $1000 on glass. This is my budget so please don’t comment such as wait till you can spend $4K etc. Scope so far that I like the look of is the Vortex VIPER PST 4-16X50 FFP.

I have owned / own Tikka, Howa and Remington all of which I was happy with (Perhaps I’m not fussy). Cheers in advance for your reply’s and I apologize for a no doubt repeated thread but takes far too long to troll through them.

    Carl

going against my user name but go something in 6.5 or 7mm
308 is ok but is a brick compared to the 6.5 or 7mm

308 would be the FTR class if you ever fancied competing.

Target/hunting rifle to 600m maximum and 308 = no problem

Grab a Tikka T3 in 308 and suppress it.

Feed it Lapua Brass and 208g a-Max's at a just touch length

If your ammo overall length is 3.060 inches long or longer (for a just touch load) then work up to 45 g of ADI 2208 for 2500 feet per second velocity.

This will give you 1004 foot pounds of energy at 930yrds in 13 degrees Celsius and an air pressure of 27.50 inHG

And 1145 feet per second velocity at 1300yrds in the same atmospheric conditions.

The 208g A-Max will drop anything in NZ and most other places with effectiveness you can rely on.

    600m won't be a problem at all.

I think you have it pinned down already.
A Less than 600y = pretty much any normal "deer" calibre with reloading of good projectile choice.
B Target shooting = cheap to run.

    A + B = C or 308win

308Win One chambering to rule them all.

I can vouch for the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 optic, very nice scope for the money & surprising clear through out the magnification range. Tracks beautifully too

Remington 308 tactical will fit in your price range and good accurate target rifle or if you can pick up frosty 's
5r even better. They have heavier contour barrels that are good for range work with repetitive shots. Tikka t3 lites are great to hunt with, accurate and nice triggers but more than 3 quick shots at range accuracy will wander due to heat. More so with a suppressor

I had really bad results with 208's at roughly 2500 fps.

Dunno if they have changed them but they blew up horribly at all game I tried them on.

Id try VLD's or nosler BT's before recommending 208s IMHO.

nothing wrong with 308's though, or 708, 243 etc

I would go Tikka 6.5x55 or .260 barrel won't heat up and wander after 3 shots either go to any range and you will see a lot of good shooters using 6.5 cal.
But everyone will have their own thoughts and these are just mine.
