Thread: Advice wanted on Carbon Fibre stocks

Had a Stug and was very happy with it. Would’ve gone again but wanted the vertical grip on the Hitech.
Both Stu and Ken are excellent to deal with.
Below is the .243 I had stocked up by @stug

Really happy with the stug stock (SG Stocks) on my howa. Super light, and groups have improved over the houge stock that was on it. Half the price of the competition, but the flip side is that the finish is a bit rough and there is a long waiting list.

I'd definitely get another.

But if u are in a hurry, or having a perfect looking rifle is important to you then look at the other brands.

I have owned and used a few - Senator (the original ones ex Tauranga), Southfort, McMillan and STUG. Have not yet tried the Hitech stocks but very keen to do so. These stocks have all performed well, and are a mix of magnum and non magnum rifles. Probably half of them I have acquired second hand, some need rebedding to get best performance. Even brand new ones may not give optimum results based on a drop in “standard fit”. Some might shoot like lasers others will benefit from bedding with your action. I had a bad come good experience with Southfort, brand new stock for Weatherby 300WSM but after a very short time it developed a crack in the area around front bedding block and would not h9ld torque. Contacted Southfort and they took it back, replaced the stock and thru in a free bedding job. So hats off to the guys for stand8ng by their product. STUG stocks I have are on non mag calibres. Have seen one on 300WM where it was struggling to handle the recoil. Needed to be pillar bedded then it was good to go.

Are the STUG stocks a replica of the standard T3 stocks?
What sort of money are the Hi Tec?

I think the Hi-tec are about $1050 but don't quote me on that

My Senator ( Ex Tauranga ) experience was not one I’d recommend.....and won’t repeat.
@300winmag has a Sako 85 300 WinMag in a Hi-Tec stock, really nice, tack driver.

I’m really happy with mine, it was really @shift14 idea when the rifle was getting setup, mind you he chose the glass as well.

So is there any weight saving to be had or is it simply a stronger, better bedded stock?

Mine was just over $1100 a few weeks back with flush cups installed.
I do like the bedding block system for a drop in fit.
Looking forward to doing this build but will have to wait!
A few pics of the Hitech

For me, what is important in a stock is how well the rifle fits and sits in hand for a standing shot. A flat underside and enough width for a solid fore-end hold. Also a decent solid hand filling pistol grip.

Have both Stug & Hi Tech, both are great. Hi-Tech have a higher comb on the Tikka than standard, nice for prone shooting.

What sort of use is the rifle going to get? Prone mainly? More for walking around? I have a couple of different Manners stocks that I really like. Had McMillan in the past, Manners are nicer I reckon (better fit for me and higher combs/longer fore ends).

The stock on the Tikka is a EHTA with OD green web and tge other one is a EH1 in swamp camo
