I have at last taken my old rifle out of the safe, rejoined NZDA Ak, went to the range for a shoot, not toooo bad all things considerd. The rifle is a 74 BRNO ZKK .308, the scope came with the rifle, I think made east Germany,fixed 4 power, any ideas what the scope could be, and as the world seems to have passed me by, should I keep the scope or change for something more modern. Any thoughts welcomed, I,m so glad I found this forum, good guys good info

I am far from expert, or even knowledgeable, but a guess on the scope would be a Pecar. If German made, it should have good optics so probably worth keeping. It depends on what you intend using it for and wether your eyes are as bad as mine :thumbsup:

If East German maybe Zeiss Jena. Pecar Berlin was West German. Had one for a while, good optics but hated the reticle moving setup. If your scope is a Pecar they were prominently labelled as such - Pecar Berlin, 4x81. Other option could be a Nickels Marburg. Is the tube alloy or steel? I am still using a 45 year old 4x81 Nickels - the optics are still as good as many modern scopes despite not having all the latest "coatings" on the lens.
Macro Ziel was another quality (non American) scope around at that time as well that would have appeared on European rifles. Not sure whether they were made by Kahles but the brand still exists under Hertel & Reuss.
IOR was a communist bloc maker as well.
Another good European scope from that era was Nickel, had a couple of mates who used them. I still have my two Pecar scopes, both 6x59, that I purchased in the 60's and am still using one of them on my .257 Roberts Ack Imp. Impressive glass even now 50 years later.
Dad has a 4 x Pecar scope on his 1964 Winchester Mod 88 .284. It was his everyday rifle until last year when he decided it was too good to be dragged about in the bush and bought a Browning Shortrac 7mm WSM with a VX3 to replace it. That's after dragging it about in the bush and hills for 40+ years of owning it :D
Nothing wrong with the Pecar scope, still works as good as the day he bought it. That rifle has shot hundreds if not thousands of animals. :thumbsup:
Your scope should have markings on it somewhere to distinguish what it is?
Hi guys, a fridge magnet tells me the scope body is alloy, it appears to be 4x30, yes the exit lens is smaller than the eyepiece, yes, windage adjustment is via 4 grub screws and is a pain, the only markings are on the height adjustment dial, very small, ZF4/S? aus] enaDDR criky, you guys know how to ask the right questions

thanks for the link Zimmer, my scope looks like a "modern" version of those scopes, right down to the 3 post reticle, re 26mm scope tubes, the rifle has dovetails on the action, might be interesting finding scope rings to fit those dovetails, maybe I should leave well enough alone.

Regards your enquire, i can't help much with the scope thing, if it has a good glass, suits your shooting distances and it hold zero why change it?
I have all the best i can afford and i learn that sometimes good basic things will work as good as the "best" and "expensive" things, all depends in what "applications" you will use it.

You shouldnt have much trouble at all finding rings to suit your rifle if you did decide to change.
