    After some Practical ideas

I am thinking about building a reasonably hard hitting rifle for Red stags. It will be a little different from my usual choice in that Ill be looking at suppressing it and therefore will likely have a shorter barrel than my usual 24 inch. The country it will be used in is beech forest with river flats, so shots of 15m too maybe 250 at max
I have a donor rifle in the safe a BRNO 600. Im thinking easiest thing to do is 30/06.
Just not sure on such with shorter barrels.

So any info on loads, barrel length etc. Or other chambering too consider.

what is it in now??? you are intending to cut it short n thread it so if its a tired old .270...so be it,the recrown may just bring back enough accuracy for 250...and lets be REAL here..thats not a huge ask accuracy wise 3-4"consistantly at hundy, will kill cleanly inside that 250 max
you loose little by giving it a whirl before rebarrel..you can trial barrel length etc and see if its what your going to be happy with going forward.

or if set on rebarrel, go big with a .35 either the 308 cased winchester offering or the longer whelan.... but again if existing barrel isnt completely poked...cut n can it and see how it goes...the $170 cut ,crown n thread plus ??$350 can still way less than $7-900 rebarrel and your can will still be there if change mind and do decide to rebarrel.

30 06 with 18" barrel should do the trick. I read somewhere they get just under 2700fps with 180 gr pills.

Actually that might not be a bad idea. Its currently got a 280AI barrel on it. Could trim it down and run heavy projectiles.

Perfect from the get go chip shots for most long action cartridges with your mentioned ranges if it’s twisted fast enough run a 180eldm as slow as you want and it’ll do as you desire

I’m not sure what impact a short tube has on a .35 whelen or if you want to go there. In my 23’ tube I get 2800 fps with a 225 gn pill. A lot of hurt out to 300. More than you need for big reds perhaps?

    165 gn in the 06 will go out a 2900 +, a 180gn 2750+.

Yeah. I had my mind set on a re-barreling, then Micky's suggestion was like, oh yeah of course. Why didnt it cross my mind? Very sensible!

Kind of why its worth asking for ideas at times.

Sensible- shorten existing barrel and use suitable projectiles
    Practical- rebarrel to 30-06
    Fun- rebarrel to 35 Whellen.

Your 280AI barrel probably has more resale value currently, than after its chopped. Go the rebarrel into something fun like 35 Whelen.
