After something new

Hey all,
I'm currently running an old Remington model 700 270 win which has done my old man a great service and since he's passed it onto me has done the same on the reds and fallow. But I'm thinking of getting a new gun for sambar and hopefully buffalo one day (I'm from Australia) so I'm thinking of a 300 win mag in Schultz and Larsen with a swarovski Z3 4-12x50 scope with ballistic turret on top any thoughts? I'm not wealthy and know it'll set me back but I figure it'll last a lifetime and will kill anything I come across!
Also in the 270 I've been using 130gn sst's and have been amazed at the damage their producing, in a red I shot this year there was large shards of bone coming out the exit wound like I've never seen before but I'm thinking of going with all the hype and loading barnes, good or bad idea?

Bloody hell Jack here you are again. Good on you mate. Hang on to your money for the beer shout on the west coast and keep the 270, it will cleanly kill anything you come across over here.

Iv never shot a buffalo before but id say the barnes would be ideal

Heavy calibre for Buffalo, I used a 416 Rigby and still had to shoot some more than once and that was shootinng from a chopper. These animals are tough, tough, tough!! and bloody dangerous. They are amazing the way they can just disappear by standing stationary.....been caught out a couple of times. When they charge they are at full speed instantly. So don't piss about with small calibres is my advice and I have shot over 200 of them

Why would you ever need to use a .416 out of a machine?

For buff I would say go at least .375, the .270 is perfectly capable on everything else.
I do however understand the need for new toys!

I know the old 270 handles most things and I love it for it's accuracy and sturdiness but like spudattack said I've got the need for a new toy at the moment! My missus will nut me though if I buy it because I'm spose to be going on a trip with her and her mates to NZ in December but just wouldnt feel the same without a gun in my hand so it's gotta be kept on the low! I do understand and agree with you Steve that thu take alot of putting down, mate of mine shot a buff and took 4 shots with 375 to ground him. Having said that my old man went hunting buff with his mate from NZ a few years back and his mate took his with a 270 so I spose bullet placement is just a big part no matter the caliber. I was thinking a 338 but was put off by the recoil I've heard they have and ballistically until you get to 200g plus pills the 300 is doing better anyway.

You already have a good rifle, especially the action. Why not re-barrel it? 338-06 would be a good choice.

Well I'd like to be able to Take shots out to 450 comfortably especially for the varmint shooting we do. But up on the sambar you can have shots on the sambar across valleys at big distances. Yeh my old man wanted me to rebarrel it but I love the old girl too much at the moment and it's still got a decent amount of rifleing left so I was thinking of keeping her till she's knackered and then rebarreling it to a 30-06 but hopefully got a while until that happens.

Howa now chamber their rifles in 375 Ruger. Could be an option, and cheaper too.
