which air rifle

we have a bit of land (3 acres) however its dead flat and i fell unconfitable useing my 22 due to fair of ricochts
we have a large issue with minor birds starlings and magpies during nesting season nesting in the house and barn so i need an air rifle to knock back the numbers alittle also be good to pratice on targets at home....

now for the issue...... noise.....next door are great and dont mind me shooting however i still dont want them to get a fright when an unexpected shot is herd which is why my 22 would be great if only there were good back stops.... so i need a quiet air rifle a mate has a 1000fps spring powerd gun and that thing is louder than my 22 unsuppressed i need somthing much quiter than that

i would love a pcp but cant justify the cost for the amout of use it will get

i know nothing about air rifles what are my options as cheep as possable

a pcp air rifle got all the ticks here

use your 22 and dont miss! cci quiets are 750fps , what makes you think a slug gun wont ricochet?

If you re in akl then visit youngs airguns and you can try them out there for noise level. If you need a cheap one then Air Arms, Weirauch or any pcp wont fit the bill. Unfortunately those are also the most reliably accurate. Powerful airguns do make a noise so you need a long barrel and built in suppressor. Have a look at crossman guns. I understand they can be made to shoot very well. Buy a smallr or older one and arrange to have it tuned before you use it. Steer clear of the big hatsan and gamo.

Like Bagheera says quality air rifles (well any quality) costs ya. I have a Weihrauch HW80 (springer) and a Theoben Rapid 7 (PCP). Quality rifles. Both have killed dozens of rabbits in the vicinity of my house. A lot shot from an upstairs window. My nearest neighbour is 200 metres away so I am wary of using a suppressed 22 and subs not that I would ever shoot in the direction of a house even with an air rifle. The air rifle is a little more PC than the 22 particularly when shooting from a house window ha ha. The potential on my property for a ricochet is also high. I would dearly love a Diana 54 but cannot afford one. Yes, visit Ron Young on Dominion Road - download his monthly catalogue first. Some of the springers are getting well up in power now and you don't have to mess around with a dive bottle. Mine is due now for a filling and a hydro blah.

It's only 500fps (.22) but thats all you want for shooting inside sheds. I have fitted a metal breach and scope to it although it was light and easy to shoot with the irons.

Pump up has all the advantaged of PCP.

Only thing was it wasn't that quiet so I got gunworks to sleeve the end of the barrel with a bit of threadded .22 barrel and I put my .22 rimfire suppressor on it and now it's almost slient.

i know a sluggun can ricohet however my thinking is the max danger range for an air rifle would only be arround 150-200m as a direct shot???? i would never shoot any rifle or air rifle towards a house on perpose but if it did happen to ricochet in the direction of the house by total accadent that it wont make it where as a 22 would even at only 750fps as its a much heayyer peice if lead carrying more momentum

i will be shooting off my deck and the angle is always a shallow downward angle so will always hit the deck (ground) just behind if i do miss

I have the same issue as the OP. Our life sentence block used to have a good kilometer safe zone to the west and I happily blazed away at maggies etc in the trees/paddocks. Unfortunately there are now houses less than 300yds away in that zone so the rimfire is a no-no.

I laid out the dosh and got a serious air rifle, namely a 40ft/lb Daystate Air Wolf in .22 cal. This thing is deadly accurate and I have killed 10-12 maggies in the last three days, at least four of them over 80yds, none closer than 65yds. Knocked two mynahs off in two successive shots yesterday, 87yds the first and 85 the second.

It's very quiet as well but the cost rules it out for many people.

not much more $ than a decent Air rifle but unlike a new springer it's already depreciated. Mine spends all of it's time killing birds now, rabbits and hares don't let me get close and managing a vineyard you don't have much opportunity to sneak up

also helps pay for itself when you go through a tin of 1000 pellets and realise how much more you would have spent on .22 ammo

When trying to keep quiet and slow but retain killing power try staying with as large a pellet as you can. In a 1000fps air rifle the velocity will drop as you increase the weight of the pellet. So I would avoid any 177 and go for a 22 or a 25 if you can find one. EG we used to sell Baikal air rifles in 177 that were 1050FPS (actually at LEAST 1050 would be a better description) and the 22 version was exactly the same except a bigger diameter barrel and pellets. It had the same power yet its speed was not 800 to 900 FPS.

25 cal would be better still. and try the heaviest pellets you can get. This will help keep the noise down without reducing effectiveness on the target animal.

cheers for the offer @Sidney a Pcp would be great but I can't afford or justify one I just want something basic was only looking at spending a round $3-400 on a little gamo whisper or something

This didn't sell so someone should ask for a relisting. The pistol normal goes for $200 odd, the metal beach is $50. It's worth buying a pistol cos its the only way you are going to hunt with a pistol in nz.

Pump up (not spring) so you can vary pressure depending on range of shot. As quiet as my suppressed rimfire.
Super accurate, head shoot pigeons easily. 22 has more hit than the 177, but both kill birds.
They don't make them new anymore but Youngs Air Gun Centre have them second hand every now and then for around $150 which is pretty good (I bought the 22 for about that 30 years ago). The guy there rates them very highly, particularly the barrel.

+1 on that. I had one as a kid in .22 and was very sad the day the house burnt down and it got melted.

Another option on the multi pump would be the Canon 737. Youngs advertise them.

well made my choice and put one on layby today will be slowly paying it off over the next month or 2 ive gone for a gamo wisper igt (piston gun) with suppressor quietest break barrel in the market according to youtube reviews the 177 is rated at 1300fps with the super light weight alloy pallets.... but I have chosen a 22cal rated at 800fps or there about but I intend to use heavy 25gn odd pallets if they shoot well in the gun which should bring speed down to around 500fps but being a heavy pellet it should still have no issues killing our minors and starlings

a little more than I was looking at spending but im sure ill have a lot of fun with it for practice etc now to build a good pallet trap to set up in the garage

After this thread I ended up at young's airguns. Came home with a Crosman 2250b.
I'm going to make a small range in the back yard for it now . . . great fun :thumbsup:

Feel free to PM me if you want any suggestions for mods. The triggers start off horrible but I have made my ok through the use of shims and 1000 grit sandpaper.

ive got the pistol version of that ive modded it into a rifle did work to the valve bolt longer barrel transfer port and steel breech it goes quite well and it was a good little project it wouldn't appeal to everyones taste but I like it
