Alternatives to Trade Me for Firearms Purchases and Sales

Trade Me has become quite an unfriendly place for buying and selling firearms, especially in recent months. While we are making efforts to rectify that, it's not clear whether those efforts will get anywhere. Therefore, it is important that we have some alternative options as well. That will allow us to hedge our bets, so to speak. Here are a few good options I've found:

GunStuff.co.nz has been around for several years and allows the sales of pretty much all types of firearms, parts, and accessories. Up until recently, it was also a good place to shop for standard capacity magazines for your rifles. It's still a good place to look for pistols, collectable firearms, holsters, and so on.

GunBrokerNZ.co.nz just started up a few weeks ago but shows promise. The number of listings on the site has been increasing rapidly so it's definitely one to watch.

AllGoods.co.nz is a site that I just found recently. It is intended to be a true competitor to Trade Me so it has a wide variety of items for sale. While it isn't intended solely for selling firearms, it does allow firearm sales and there are no restrictions on the types of firearms that can be listed there. You may have to sift through a few listings for replica firearms, but otherwise it's quite good. They make it much easier to contact the seller privately as well. Just a quick note; if you find yourself stuck looking at just used or just new items, there is a button in the lower right-hand corner to switch between new and used items.

I hope this is a useful reference, and perhaps you hadn't previously heard of one or more of these sites. Happy shopping!

With it looking like registration is looming I wonder if online sales are going to become highly regulated, e.g b cat type change of ownership Police checks for every sale, prior to actual handover.

I imagine the change of ownership would involve the details of the firearm and the details of both the seller and purchaser. Presumably this would be on a form to file with the arms office. The mail order form would just need the firearm details to be completed in full.

I sincerely hope they don't end up limiting numbers one can own

The best format for an online gunsales that I have personally used is https://www.usedguns.com.au/Default.aspx
It is simple to use and it is regularly updated numerous times a day ( just keep hitting the whats new tab ) and is the leading Australian gun sales site by miles .

Thanks for the info gents... most helpful! Good to know there’s still good sort around, especially with all the animosity toward guns and gun owners nowadays.

As a kiwi I spent 10 years in Australia. I was a usedguns.com convert. In Australia this website is extremely active and all rifles/shotguns sold privately are then transferred through your designated dealer. I found this worked well in general both state wise, and interstate wise. Yes dealers skim a fee for the transfer but in my experience most act professionally. Most dealers will also handle obtaining the permit to procure for you.( they have access to an online system) There is a lot of noise about Australia having restricted gun laws however in my experience Australia has a far more active and transactional gun industry than NZ. Both private and retail.

Sooo I decided to push my luck and see what happened.

I put up a semi auto shotgun, waited for it to be removed and then told the admin that emailed me that it had been converted to straight pull. He replied and said they had actually only pulled the ad because they were worried it was under the legal length, so I confirmed it was >72cm with photos and the ad was put back up. He didn't actually even mention the fact that it was obviously semi auto.

So overall an inconclusive and confusing test. Someone else should put one up and say straight up in the description that it's straight pull and see if it's removed. Whoever buys it will most likely know its BS or at worst be stoked that it actually isn't a shitty straight pull.
