    American Goldenrod 110/240v

    Hey team, I’ve got a goldenrod I want to chuck into my gun safe. Now they come with an American two prong plug and I believe they are 110v.

    What’s the go with using here in Nz being 240v, can you just put a new Nz plug on and away you go? Not keen to burn the house down haha. Cheers

    Yes, just check the wattage of the goldenrod and google for a stepdown transformer that is rated for at least the same.

    Putting 230 through it probably wouldn’t burn your house, it would probably kill the goldenrod though.

    A small stepdown transformer is what you need.
    Something like this https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/buy/t...RoC9XQQAvD_BwE

    If you wire it to 230V it'll effectively heat at a higher power than it would at 110V, the element may not be rated for this and could burn out or it could be robust enough and work just fine. I'd say the Goldenrod manufacturer may make the elements in either 110v or 230v ratings.

    Just for fun (keeping in mind it's been a while since I've done any power conversion calcs and may have this way wrong) a 12" Goldenrod is apparently 8watts at 110V.
    R = V²/P so 100²-8 = 1512.5Ω
    P = V²/R so 230²/1512.5 = 35.98 Watts

    So it'll heat at 36ish watts until it burns out either quickly or slowly.

    Well I have a couple of golden rod safe heaters which I bought through Workshop innovation in NZ. These are 220 v and I don’t remember having to change the plugs. I see Reloaders are selling 220 v versions as well. A light bulb does the same job but I wasn’t sure my team in the safe would sleep well with the light on!!

    stick a 3amp diode in series with the phase wire and you get 120V of 1/2 wave ac. but i wouldnt do it
