Unsure m8, I’m not much of an expert on the K98
I just know it’s in pretty good nick & has a laminated stock

The clues are if the caliber is 8mm/308 and if markings of Star of David is present or the Waffenamts aka dirty birds are peened/undamaged.

Identifying one is an enjoyable process.

No it’s a German one, has nazi crests/eagle on it, 7.92
Doesn’t appear to have matched bolt/ receiver serial numbers
He brought from a sports shop in Taranaki in 1960

If its laminate stock then it'd be a late war kriegs model. The early ones were normal stocks.

Is it full wood? Put some pics up.

There's also a video on forgotten weapons YouTube channel about the different designs that the k 98 went through.

most likely a post war build from NOS parts left over in the factories thousands were pumped out as there was a demand worldwide and it also provided a boost for economies trying to recover after 5 years of war and 10 years of depression. the stampings on the receiver would give a ballpark guess as to where and when it was assembled . being that he bought it in 1960 it could have technically been new (never used) even tho the parts were maybe 15 years old .
