Anyone in Chch got a 1/2" lapping bar I could borrow?

I have some new rings, tempted to just slap 'em on and hope for the best but it's a nice scope so I figure I should do it right.

A fine file can be used to break the sharp edges of the rings, but isn't the right tool for correcting minor misalignment (the point of lapping) - you'd have no reference of where you needed to correct. Can't say I've seen many painted rings either - normally blued or anodized.

To the OP - are you sure you meant 1/2" (12.7mm) diameter? I've never run across a scope with that tube size.

I have a set of lapping bars. 25mm.
You'll need to get your own compound.

Something to consider - I used to use lapping grit, but nowadays I use spray adhesive to glue a strip of 600-800gr wet and dry to a 25mm lapping bar instead. The paper thickness brings it up nicely to 25.4mm (1"), and it cuts fast and clean compared to lapping compound. It also means that you don't have to worry about the lapping grit embedding in the rings if the rings are softer than the bar (such as with aluminium rings).

Thanks all. You're right of course @PaulNZ, I meant 1 inch / 25mm. Late at night and I screwed up my metric / imperial conversion... I'll flick you a PM @scottrods, I'm in Avonhead so a pickup from your work would be easy :thumbsup:

Still screwed up.... 25.4mm :P
