Thread: Aperture, peep, sight for Baikal IZH-18MH.

Hi Guys. Am setting up my old Baikal with a peep sight. Williams Savage 54 will work but struggeling to get my hands on one. Looking to get a longer sight plane. It's a camp rifle, so don't want to get to carried away. Something that will fit onto the chamber dove tail will work. Any ideas? A spare time project. Cheers

RIMFIRE GROOVE SIGHTS

I have bought a couple of sights off these guys in the past very nice. Not sure if they still do international quick email will tell.

If that's the incorrect groove size plenty on there to choose from get a gunsmith to tap the top.

Just mucking around with the rifle really. Used wrong term, sight radius being correct. Aperture on dovetailed chamber will make a big difference to basic V well forward of chamber. It's a spare rifle, probably won't be used on an animal, but who knows. 7.62 x 39, so quite capable of 200 metres if necessary. Elevation adjustment, the foresight adjusts on the Baikal, but various aperture sights adjust for elevation as well. If I can get my hands on them. Also working on developing a 150 grn load for it, slowly getting there. It's just a spare time project, a camp rifle. You never know when some poor soul forgets his bolt

I dont know how much 'mucking' around with this you want to do, but I have seen a couple of these rechambered , one into 303, and another into 7.62x54R. I do not know if the x39 twist rate is similar to optimal rates for the two larger ones, but the 54R is not much faster , just the projectile is about twice the size (203gr doing about 2500 versus the 123gr doing 2300) and the 303 is somewhere in between so with the similar velicities twist rate should be acceptable I would have thought.

The rimmed cartridges like the 303 and 7.62x54R are ideal shapes for this type of rear loading action.

Thanks, good info, but I'll stick with the original cartridge. Got a couple of 150 grn loads I'm working on. One .312 the other .308. I'll run them through a chrony and let you know. Finding time's the issue. Cheers.

The 7.62x39 is a great wee cartridge. And I like the ability o put the rifle IN the pack on the trip out if you have already shot enough meat etc....

Hi, nice setup and most fun rifle in my safe, I also installed skinner sight but then front sight post was too short, but reasinably easy fix making a taller sight with a 1inch wood drill bit replacing factory post, a spot weld and some dremel work. Heat and blue in oil and shoots like a dream.

Not sure what you mean longer sight plane?
"sight radius" aka "aperture accuracy" will be limited by length front to back...
Elevation adjustment? How far are you planning to shoot?

bakail open sights have the rear mounted quite a way forward on barrel...it sits infront of most scopes...so fitting aperture on rear of dovetail will increase sight radiuos by 8-10" at least 6" anyway. really like the look of those skinners.

@Hatz, rifle got put on back burner for awhile but now back on bench. If you still have yours can you give me the height of your new foresight blade? From top of ramp to tip of blade. Will give me a baseline to work with. @Micky Duck, yep, photo for sure

Sorry dont have rifle anymore, just clamp/tie something onto barrel and zero through barrel and over clamped sight(Looking through peep) to get hight.
