Thread: Ar15 7.62x39

having just assembled my second upper it has got me thinking about different bullets that can run thru the little ar package.

7.62x39 is a sitter due to the cheep bullets, cases and general 7.62x39 hunting bullets

what is required to make this swap? a barrel and bolt face?
will standard 223 mags run the taper of this case?
can I cheeply get a 308 barrel and have a barrel extention fitted?


where can I source a Barrel, Bolt head and mags from if needed?
Iv got the tool to replace barrels which is piece of piss easy.

is there a better option?
300blk?
6.5 something, x39 grendel ect
7mmx39?

Is the cost of having a barrel extention fitted and the barrel chambered, gas block hole drilled, worth it?
Iv got a 7mm barrel off a 7mm08 rem 700 that would be great to use

X39 is dumb now that .300 AAC is mainstream

6.5 Grendel is cool but good luck getting parts or ammo!!

x39 AR's (as well as poorly built Grendel's) are notorious for shitting bolts. I wouldn't touch one when you can get .300Blk - Same bolt, same mags, better projectiles, form it out of .223 brass. Alternatively you can buy a good AK.

the AK mention has come up in conversation with friends about this topic, prob bieng if you want to scope it, side mount crap, massive clunky safety poor triggers. the upper plan just seems easier


surely the bolt issue would have been sorted quick smart. the x39 just appeals for the put in the gun and shoot aspect without case prep and all that jazz.

loading bullets for the ar15 just sounds too hard, - Bang "Oh fuck where did that case go"

Agree on forming etc being way too much hassle for a semi-auto, but you were talking 7mmx39 etc... .300 AAC is way more mainstream and factory than that...


Get an AR10 platform carbine and shoot steel cased .308



Or use .223 AR upper for "blasting" and chuck on .300 AAC, 6.5G, 6.8SPC, whatever, for hunting

Norinco 56S if you want to blast.
Will NEVER jam and cost less than building and upper for an AR

I see them come up now and then on trademe, I have the brass avilable to form but its really just a pain in the ass to loose after one shot
No mags or bolt face does sound attractive tho...

Collect a bunch of brass, send it to me for processing shoot it and pickup what you see - forget the rest.
Its not expensive to form and cut. You'd have 500 back on your doorstep for under $75.. you can afford to loose some at that price

You can build an AR10 carbine which will only weigh a couple hundred grams, if that, more than an equivilent AR15 setup

.308 has still has heaps of gas (for a .308, anyway, hah) out of a 14.5" barrel, chuck a light muzzle can on it for the blast

.308 carbines can over gas horrendously, can take a bit of fuckin around to get them to work.

Or buy a factory barrel from the likes of Noveske

True but I don't generally believe in buying broken guns. If you need to put an adjustable block on a gun to get it to work, they shouldn't be selling the fuckin things till they get their shit together.
