Not for myself:
What do you think is the best factory ammo to run through AR15s? Specifically a Remington R15 with an 18 inch barrel and 1/9 twist. Not set up for reloading. What's best for hunting? What's best for target? Plinking?

Brass cased Hornady training ammo seams to be going well through most AR's. Easy on the wallet and kills pretty well too.

Ive had little to no change in poi when changing from brass and steel cased hornady. Shoots around the inch mark through all my gear. Price wise its pretty much unmatched by anything out there, especially for consistancy and reliability. Shame its hard to find unless you know where to look....
heaps on trademe at the moment
I got some off this guy last week
55grn SP 223 Rem ,Ammo - Hornady - Brass case | Trade Me
Most of that hornady on tardit is a dollar a round other than the tula which works out at 75 cents with postage. Theres even a box of steel case sitting at 51 bucks. No thanks. Ive been spoilt with what ive been scoring it for. If anymore of it comes into the country im dropping a few thosand dollars on the stuff. Hornady make a brilliant round.
I find the hornday 55gr sp make nice holes in 6mm steel

The BVAC 55 grain SP from Reloaders is pretty good. It's MOA stuff in a decent rig, and almost all Lake City brass.
Highland or PriviPartisan (same stuff) runs nicely through my R15.
Hornady steel training ammo is good - but supply has almost dried right up, and Hornady aren't making anymore in the forseeable future yet.
Used these 2 brands mainly and are good on goats, wallaby's, bunnies and fallow deer.
I've been warned off using the Barnaul ammo as well.
Steel hornadys due into NZ in 3 weeks or so from memory .Been a while since I spoke to the importers about that stuff.
That would be great if there is a supply coming.
Hornady have it on their list of ammo they've stopped making for a while. There's the link to that on here in another thread.

Last I heard there was a shipment coming . Will confirm in the next day or so once I ring them as theres a few things I need to restock from the the weekend and today .
Due sometime next week .Both brass and steel
Lol and it will probably all be gone in a week. It's great "cheap" ammo. I'm surprised it shoots so well in so many guns, when I chronied it there was a good amount of shot to shot variation.
I think it's loaded on the weaker side too, or uses a slower powder. Only does around 2850fps (from memory) in my 16" tube. I can get that speed with 68gr with my handloads.
In the cheaper arena I have good success with:
TARGET = Hornady SP 55gr ($1.00 per round)
PLINK = BVAC 55gr FMJ ($0.70 per round)
Both are available cheaper for good volumes or there is also steel case Barnaul which is on par performance wise with BVAC.
In my experience you cant beat reloaders for everyday pricing and deals on bulk purchases as they have looked after my mates and I on a few ocassions now.
One possible option is Auckland members band together to improve purchasing power and we go straight to the distributors as a collective and buy an absolute sh1t load :D

Anyone tried Tula ammo in their AR's?
Just wanting a cheap ammo for roos. Don't want to loose my good brass chasing those hippityhoppities (re I'm a cheap soab).
Tula is mad underpressure
Cheers Gimp.
You haven't had any stuck cases, FTF or FTE issues?
Nah it's just loaded Soft
Cheers. I might get a box to try.
Just a mention. Gunworks has a new shipment of Hornady 55g SP Brass 50 packs. Worth a look
Nice. I'll have to pop in there. ;)
I hope Hornady will start to produce more of the steel training ammo.........
CRT can get the training ammo when it's around, and as cheap as anywhere else (better than a lot) I heard very soon after xmas.
Does anyone know if any of this is still around? Trademe has gone quiet on it and it seems to be outta stock most places : /
Nope, none, never again, probably
Sometimes it hides ;)
HORNADY 223rem 55gr SP AMMUNITION | Trade Me
in brass, $45/box.
Tried some Tula 55gr HP through the AR last weekend.
Got the last packet from Gunshitty. They reckon they won't be getting anymore for at least 2 years or so due to demand and production ability.
Unless I did head shots the roos didn't drop. the few I found (bullet riddled I might add) had through and throughs. Seemed the HP weren't opening up on impact on the soft wobblies.
Might try opening up the HP a tad and see what it does.
Also found the POI of the Tula is way different to the SP 55gr reloads I have used. I was holding under approx 2" to hit anything.
I've found that Tula is generally pretty shit. Actually all Russian .223 I've tried has been shit. I think once the local supply of .223 has dried up the AR's will be pretty quiet for a few years for those who don't hand load. I wonder how much our .223 consumption has risen with the rise of the AR in NZ? Sika show before last me an FletchNZ talked to Steve from Steve's Wholesale who said they had imported and sold over half a million rounds of Hornady Training Ammo at the time. I guess that isn't really a big number if you think of 500 people shooting 1000 rounds each, I've probably done 1200 myself.
yea Iv found I just shoot less when there is less ammo avialble
on a good note I shot well under a inch group with a friends NEA with Steller&bellmont at 100m
he didnt know his gun was that accurate
