Anyone read Japanese ?
Purely curiosity, the rifle is toast.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !
its a model 1905 type 38 made by the Nagoya arsenail made during the showa era (1929 to 1989) sorry i cant be more specific as to the exact date of manufacture
if it is not shootable then if you look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwnQ...nnel=MarkNovak
boiling it, soft wheel the rust off and repeat it multiple times. should at least stabilise it and get it to a state of looking presentable.
I think only the Serial Number on the side can approx tell the manufacture date of the rifle. The chrysanthemum had been defaced with 8 circles for capture identification. The 3 kanji characters: 三 (3) 八 (8) 式 (Type) , just the name of the rifle "Type 38" which not reflect the manufacture date, I might be wrong though.
