Trust the dog.........................................ALWAYS Trust the dog!!
I deal with my astigmatism by not buying Red Dots or 'glowey' scopes.
In the 'good old days (2015)', I lusted after a USMC ACOG - until I got to look through one that a mate had.
My lust ended that day....
In longrange riflery, trajectory is the pure science part. Gravity is a constant for our purposes.
Wind is in the art department.
Light is pure fucking voodoo.
Yup i have astigmatism as well, i can deal with illuminated reticles ok especially if you can adjust the brightness but true red dots are not great for me either, totally agree glasees over contacts for me too.

The eye quack told me it's from rubbing your eyes. Stop rubbing your eyes, and it won't get worse, but whatever damage done is done

Greetings @Porch-Rocker,
Another vote for glasses. I tried contacts but one day they would be good and the next they would be useless. Astigmatism is quite common. For me one of the crosshairs in a standard scope looks a little grey without glasses. I have never had a red dot scope.
GPM.
Im like 65% of the population and have an astigmatism as well. Have never used contacts, always glasses for the past 50+ years. No problems with scopes, and seemingly little problem with red dot's. Have used a red dot in the past, 30mm, 10 shot group with a 22 @100 metres, so none too shabby. And I purchased one off the forum a week or 2 back to mount on a shotgun when I can find the right mount. Yesterday I mounted it on a 223 that seems to shoot pretty good. three shots to zero at 50, 3 shots to group at 100, and then 3 shots at a 200x200 gong at 200 metres. Had to dial it down in brightness, and the astigmatism was noticeable at that range, but not too bad. Three shot group, 60mm, 1 click left of centre. Was pretty stoked with that, definitely a 200 metre deer rifle if needed.
So dialing back the brightness seemed to work for me. Just wish some of the bloody cars on the road could dial back their headlights at night, cos thats when my astigmatism gets me the most.
Try a green dot
I need contacts for my poor vision and astigmatism.
I don't find that I blink out my weighted contacts.
For protection from wind I'll generally wear wrap around sunglasses or safety glasses.
You should visit a reputable optometrist to discuss your problem and potential solutions.
I don't recommend the major franchised optometrist companies as they told me "Your prescription is too hard and we don't deal with that."
My wife struggles with this also, to the point she doesn’t drive at night.
We found that illuminated etched reticles work for her and cause no issues. Although we found that out on a leupold CQ/T MK4
She now uses an ACOG, and absolutely loves it.
Maybe prism style optics will work for you, maybe an EO tech or similar.
For context I use an aimpoint Comp M2 mil which I absolutely love, and can get reliable hits out past 80m but she couldn’t use it past 20m if she tried, but put her behind the acog and she’s away laughing.
Greetings again,
I have found as I got older my unaided vision has improved but my night vision has not. The two are linked I just did my 75 year relicensing and am OK to drive without glasses but do use them at night or on trips. I can shoot without them but for load testing and target shooting I do use them. I can still read the paper without them as long as the light is good. You will find what you need your specks for over time. I worked as a draughtsman either full or part time for over 50 years and I certainly needed them for that.
Regards Grandpamac.
For someone who is pretty active, glasses are sh*t IMO. They are a nuisance for work and when out hunting.
I've got pretty severe astigmatisms in both eyes and for me, contacts are a game changer. Very rarely have I ever had any issues with them popping out etc.
I wear them 99% of the time and seldom wear my glasses. Even when driving at night etc.
Used to have issues wth astigmatism and red dots, had cateract surgery now all good, just as a matter of interest
