    Athlon Scopes

About 3 or 4 weeks ago I purchased an Athlon scope off a forum member.

Scope and money changed hands no problem so all good.

Unfortunately when sighting it in it developed a problem with it's ability to focus, specifically you couldn't focus much past 60 odd yards.

Now it turns out I maybe the 4th owner of this scope and I must confess I was a bit anxious when I realised I was going to be putting the 'no fault no receipt guarantee' to the test.

Scopeuout replied to my Sunday evenings email at around 8:30 Monday morning advising me of who the distributer was.

A short phone call to the distributer resulted in an address being emailed to me for me to forward the scope to.

Tuesday morning the scope was on it's way.

Wednesday I received an email advising me they had received the scope and determined that they were going to supply me with a new one and it will take around 2 weeks as it has to come ex Melbourne.

That was exactly 2 weeks ago.

I am very relieved and pleased with the support that Athlon and their distrubution network provided.

Athlon scopes won't be everyone's cup of tea but my experience is that their support is first class

Good to hear they were prompt in fixing it up with minimal issues! Was that through C.R Kennedy?

Is that a Argos HMR 2-12x42? How do you like it?

Yes it was and to be fair I haven't had much of a chance to use it.

First shot on the old scope upset the focus so wasn't really able to use it after that.

What I can say is that the dials seem nice and responsive, glass seems clear enough for the price.

    It's the same weight as a vx6

The only thing I would mention is that the center dot is fairly chunky. Makes it good for hunting, maybe not so good for target shooting.

It would be better if it had an auto off feature for the illumination but I guess that is one of the compromises you make with a cheaper scope.

Any further feedback on the Argos scope now if you have had the chance to use it ?

Shot a handfull of deer and goats with it now, ranges from 5m to 300m (missed at 500 but that wasn't the scopes fault)

For the price it is a good value scope.

What I like, 1 inch tube, fairly light for it's class and I like having x2 as my low power.

I like the turrets, nice clicks, can reset the zero with a 10 cent piece and plenty of travel if dialing is your thing. No zero stop

Things to note is the dot in the center is fine for hunting especially in close but a bit of a pain when at the range at distance.

The Illuminated reticle doesn't turn off after a period of inactivity, it is completely manual.

The glass definately not as good as more expensive brands but that's only a problem if first and last light is important to you.

The one minus is this replacement scope is also doing funny things with the parallax adjustment. Specifically when at the range after your first shot the parallax seems to have 'moved' and you need to adjust again.
Interestingly only need to reset once. I think that the mirror (or what ever it is in there) must be a bit sticky on it's tracks.
It does however seem to be getting less of an issue with more use, around 200 rounds on my 280AI so far.

If you are on a budget it is an option worth considering

I got a neos 3-9x40 rimfire reticle one. The reticle is very thick too and does make accurate target shooting not that, well, accurate. Little heavier than a vortex equivalent, glass similar. the magnification ring rotates the other way so I have white marker on both to remind me which way to go...
