How easy would it be to import what would be considered a tactical scope theough the mail
For Aus?

Are you better to unpackage and claim is as not new to avoid tax? Are there any rules stopping it?

I recommend you go careful here because some scopes - especially those classified as "tactical" - have restrictions on export.

Chat you your firearms officer before you start. You will need a import permit anyway, so might as well get some advice while you are there.

And yes, there are rules around trying to falsify the amount of tax you need to pay.

Yip, i have ordered a few from Aussie, and you will need an export permit.
You can do this yourself, but its not easy and its time consuming, best get the shop you are dealing with to do it. However saying that many dont or dont want to do it...
There is no cost for the above.

And dont forget your NZ import permit...

Avoiding tax is luck, some have good, some have bad...

Just get someone to bring it over for you. I just brought a scope in from one of the lads coming over
