Back to the drawing board rem 788 .308 ammo

Well I just had a very frustrating time at the range.
I have a new to me vx3, and trying to zero it today, to set up the CDS. I made the very amateur mistake of trying to zero a new scope with new ammo. It took me a whole pack to figure out that my rifle doesn’t like the hornady SSP. At all. I just could not get it to group.
I zeroed the rifle with the federal blue box within three shots under an inch. Should I just abandon trying to find a better long range cartridge? Or will the trusty blue box don’t to 400m?

Of course it will do the job to 400. Poke it in vital bit and animal won't go far at all.

Stick with what works, take comfort in the fact that simple cup and core bullets have been working for over a century perfectly well. Don't drink the marketing cool aide stick with blue box unless you want to descend into the abyss that is reloading

    A 150gr powershok has a BC of .313. What's your MV? There's a good chance it's worse than a good .223 load at 400m

Like if it's doing 1500fps at 400m there's a good chance you're basically bow hunting

You're right, win PowerPoint. 308 150gr is bloody anemic in my rifle - on the packet drop at 100 and 200 but rolling along the range floor at 275m. It's at 50 and 150 that the truth comes out, just lucky chance that the rainbow lines up at 200 and 100m. I reckon its a good 10% or more down on go for some reason judging from how far out the drops are! Not hard for .308 to be crappier than .223.

All sorted now. My local hnf had Fiocci 150gn on sale so I have it a try. It shoots the SST with a milder load than the super performance. It easily put x5 rounds under an inch. Chronoed at 2660 which is the same as the blue box out of my rifle. Just need to send off for the CDS voucher and I’ll be set. The ammo was only $45 a box so I bought 5 haha. Should see me through the next few years now I have it set up!

Ha na this is a deer rifle only. I might pop the occasional wallaby if the opportunity presents, but I won’t be shooting 95! Thats what the .223 is for

When I had my 308 I was trying to find a factory load it would shoot. Ended up being the weird looking S&B with the strange looking stepped pill. It shot that stuff so well it would be the only rifle I didnt bother handloading for

Velocity is thrilling, but diameter does the real killing.
