    Baikal IZH 18

Looking at one of these for a cheap-and-cheerful bush / pack gun, bit of a DIY project...

    Probably 7.62x39

Happy to customise stock, do bedding job, polish trigger etc and have a general tinker.

Any feedback on which scopes you are using on the Baikal would be appreciated.

What eye-relief should I be looking for in scopes ?

Also keen to hear from folks that have shortened them, how much did you cut off, whats the weight of your setup all-up ?

hmmm, will check if wooden stock version is available in 308.

getting back into hunting after long break. used to 308 and 30-06, but it's not like I'll going after kudu and oryx ;-)

my "toy" fund is looking a bit sad at the moment, hence the 7.62x39, nit sure how long it's going to be before I get reloading setup again.

better half is also likely to have a go at some plinking and maybe the odd goat or 2, so less kick is a factor.

lotto money project is a 6.5 LR rig, but 'id rather get out there sooner and get some veni in the freezer

anyone ever had a look at swapping the barrels between the IZH-18 models ?

the 'extractor' and chamber are both part of the barrel..

is it possible to use the same receiver and fore-grip for different caliber barrels ?

    Re: Baikal IZH 18

No experience with one of them but fixed my dads rossi after his "gunsmith" mate had been at it.
    (help with rossi thread )

Shortened to 18inch i think. Pointed and balanced beautifully for off hand shots with a shit fixed 3x scope on it.

Recoil was lively without suppressor but not offensive noise on the other hand from short barrel and slow for bullet weight powder was something else!

    I have two EBF

one in .222 one in .223.

Both have sub $100 3-9x40s on them although you need an adapter rail to take the scope mounts as the dovetail machined into the reciever is very short as can be seen here.

Both shoot better than I can aim.

    Haven't shortened either.

Yes the barrels are interchangeable however you may need to fit the forestock for each barrel, simple file job.

They weigh about 6lbs all up.

The triggers are not the best but they are good enough.

    I like them ..... Goats don't.

    Cheers
    Pete

I also own one in 12ga.

It was the first shot gun I bought ....... I bought it new from Craftys when he was in Havlock North...... I was 16 (1980) and the ink on my firearms licence was still wet when I handed over the princely sum of $65.00. I think he gave me some ammo as well.

It's stll in my gun cabinet and still shoots good as gold.

I must try and see if it's also interchangeable with the Rifles as it looks identical.

308 might give you a good boot as these rifles don't weigh much ..... cut down barrel and slienced might make it more bearable.

Like I said the triggers on these Baikals are not the best .... bench shooters would notice and not like them ..... Hunters wouldn't notice ..... Goats dont seem to mind either.

I've searched the net looking for ideas to improve them but haven't come across any good info yet other than to smooth up all the surfaces.

    Cheers
    Pete

    Hey Pete,

Let me know about the 12ga, will be interested to hear if it works.

Yup, mines a 7.62x39 about to get the chop to 18 inches, got a DPT can for it. And you're spot on about the boot, even the x39 has a noticeable shunt, just goes to show that it is the rifle, not necessarily the caliber.
