Thread: Bang for buck night vision.

I'm in the process of getting together gear to go into pest control and I'm looking for advice on night vision scopes. Right now im looking at the atn xsight 4k the pard 008 or 007 clip on. Pulsar digex , the yukon sight line ect. I will be using a thermal handheld for dection. But after talking to a few pro guys I don't think thermal scopes will be the way I go. And to be frank it's a lot of capital that could be well spent else where. So I'm just after real world experience with what I should be Looking at. Most of my shooting will be bunnies and but larger game will be on the cards too. What I really want is decent clarity and to be able to take animals clearly out to 300 odd yards and having a clear picture for second and third shots. Any way cheers in advance for any advice.

From my experience, thermal scanner combined with night vision clip on is a very effective starting point. BUT, it can be a lot of admin when you're scanning with thermal, swapping to rifle to reacquire the target, then fire.

I've used the pard 007a a fair bit and it's useful being able to swap between different rifles depending on the day. It will add to the scope length, on my 17hmr I need to use a slip on butt pad to get the eye relief/sight picture.
Briefly had an ATN xsight, that was pretty heavy and with the external battery pack and extra IR. Very clumsy and I didn't like it at all.

If you are just running one rifle then a full digital night vision scope could be the best, either Sytong or Pard. I haven't had experience using either of those units.


From reviews around this forum the Sytongs from Nightvision NZ are good to deal with and have sharp pricing.

If you're coming up central way then sing out, have a play with the pard 007 and the conotech 350 I use.

I've used a handheld thermal now for 4 months. Its been brilliant at finding game.
I think if you had a handheld thermal, if you had an NV scope then you wouldn't have it very long. Thermal is the only game now.
Just remember that identifying true range with a thermal isn't possible unless you go with a model with laser RF. The stadiometric RF option is not acurate and tedious.

I've spoken to at least 3 guys that have had thermal scopes and have gone back to night vision.

I know maybe 30 who have gone the other way :-)

But this new infiRay is getting great reviews out of Britain

Fair enough but like I said the moolah needed to buy a decent thermal scope compared to NV would be needed elsewhere. I'm not ruling out thermal scopes in the future but as for now I will be going thermal handheld and NV rifle mount. Cheers.

Cartman, do yourself a favour and hit Ken up at Nightvision NZ. He's quite knowledgable and he sells a good range of night vision products. He's an honist bloke and will give you a strait answer.

He spends hours researching new developments saving us a lot of time doing the research ourselfs.

Ban luck Phil is still not with us, great input on this subject.
