Barrel length vs speed 7mm rem mag

Anyone got solid data in the same ammo before and after a barrel chop?

Just brought one of those boring plastic fantastic tikka t3 thingies
The last year of so I have been borrowing hunting rifles for the few times per year I hunt
But I figured I should get one of my own I wasn’t really looking for a cannon but can’t really turn down a tikka in mint condition with a gunworks suppressor for well under a grand

It’s pretty stupidly long though bbl is currently 22” plus suppressor so im thinking about taking another few off (19-20”)

Although i could reload (I have all the gear and know how) ill be lucky to shoot 20 per year so im not going to bother

I keep my hunting shots 300 or closer so im planning on zero at 200 that should get me a point and shoot gun from 50-300

Current ammo plan is Hornady white tail 139gn if the rifle shoots it ok

    What’s the thoughts?

Take only enough off so suppressor is just clearing stock. Not a lot of point in hooking a two ton two axle trailer up behind a Ferrari. Keep enough length to retain velocity and let powder burn in barrel.

Bin the suppressor, 22 inch is short enough for that amount of powder anyway. 24" is short enough.

Didn’t Greg Duley have an Rod n Rifle article re what he called a superpig ie a 7rm cut to 20”?

Put a dpt mag suppressor on that rifle they are only 95mm muzzle forward from memory.

Chopped my tikka 7rm to 22” added the dpt and i have the before and after numbers with same hand loads. I am overseas atm can’t look it up but from memory i was surprised the velocity didn’t change between unsurpressed 24” and surpressed 22”.

Difference between 22 and 20 less than 50 fps

That suppressor does look very long. Swap it for a DPT. Anywhere from 20-22” is a nice setup. Mine was 21” and i’ve helped setup multiple mates ones at 20” and the likes too. They go well.

Mine at 21” was running around 2950 fps with 162 ELDX. All the 20” ones i’ve seen or setup still ran 2900+ with 160 projectiles which is heaps of snort.

    Good to know
Im assuming that’s with warm handloads not anaemic factory ammo?

I'm picking by looks it is a early gun works Spartan. Awesome suppressor. I've directly compared mine to DPT and honestly there is bugger all real world difference in overall length. Lay rifle down on floor with muzzle at carpet join.take note of where recoil pad is. Fit one. Then fit the other. The extreme end length will vary by less than an inch. Where the gun works is longer is back towards the stock...for me that is a bonus as it puts a little of the little weight back closer to hands,eg less muzzle heavy. It's not a huge amount but it's noticeable, the other thing for bush hobbit is it's not a big step up in size out on barrel to catch on vines etc as the step up is closer to foreend and is smaller anyway. Don't get me wrong I love my DPT cans too.but the gun works jobbies are every bit as good on longer barrel.
