Thread: Battery failures on illuminated scopes.

Just curious if anyone has experienced battery fairures that have in turn damaged the illumination circuitry in a scope. Particularly CR2032 batteries.
I’ve always removed the batteries prior to long periods of no expected use as an absolute precaution.
Recently, one of the spare batteries I keep aside looked like it had leaked in the packaging so I was glad it wasn’t in the scope. It had corroded quite badly from something at the very least.
Anyone have any clever ideas regarding this?
I presume they have corrosive contents that can discharge and make things go fizz?

I always mean to, and always forget to actually remove them. Been lucky so far

never buy budget batteries as they are not well sealed, i repair lots of gears with corrosion from crap quality batteries

What brand is considered most reputable?

I had "vartas" leak in a Lenser head light stored as an emergency torch,ate the springs.

Got out my old Shooting Chrony after not using it for 6 months and opened it up to fit a battery. Uh-oh seems I'd left a battery in it...

the 9v battery looks to have cooked and burst open with some force, leaving bits of carbon all through the Chrony.

maxells are good, so are panasonic and sanyo

I’ve had no issues in my scopes in the last 15 years and they have had a hard life in NZ conditions, snow,alpine frosts,salt water, Marlborough 30+ degree summer days. It could be a moisture or condensation thing inside the battery compartment?

Yeah, been used in computers for many years and can't think of a single failure in well over 25 years in hundreds of computers.

Maybe you assume wrong. Maybe the circuitry went bad and did an innocent battery in with a short circuit. That could easily blow the best battery.

No, the bung battery was in its original packaging.
