From the manual...so the work around is to actually turn off the illumination while driving to your hunting area.
3. To deactivate the illumination, press and hold the button for at least 3 seconds. When reactivated, the
illumination will return to the last used setting.
Leupold third generation illumination systems utilize a proprietary Motion Sensor Technology (MSTTM) to
automatically preserve battery life. If the illumination is activated and the scope/rifle is left dormant for a
period of five minutes, the illumination will automatically turn off, but will immediately reactivate as soon as
the scope/rifle is moved even slightly
