Bedding jobs? Recommendations and how much?

Hey guys,
I want to get my Remmy 700 back into its thumbhole Boyds stock, however it doesn't shoot as well as it does when it's in the factory stock. I'm thinking maybe a bedding job is in order, but I don't know much about it.

I've spoken to one gunsmith a while ago (I forget who) and he said $200, which seems a bit steep.

Anyone have any recommendations for people that do a decent job and a rough cost?

Anyone done a diy job on this? From what I've read it doesn't seem hard... but at the same time I don't want to have to clean this shit out of the stock and off the rifle if I make a cock up... which I probably would :P

If you sit down and work out the time involved from a professional point of view $200 seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I suppose that's fairly reasonable. Sounds like a couple hours work.
I wonder if there's someone around Auckland. I don't really want to send the rifle away.

To bed a rifle properly is a 24hr effort... $200 is very reasonable.... Check out nathan fosters site he has excellent videos on how to of bedding a 700 :)

It's a lot of work, and very stressful if it starts turning pear shaped on you.

Nathan fosters kits are a good start, but don't use the release agent that he supplies as it stains Stainless Steel. The Brownells release agent is far better.

that included removing the bedding material(for the bedding job I messed up) reassembling and posting it back to me.

Buy Nathans Kit, comes with detailed instructions release agent etc. Its like $60?

no go devcon instead its much better, and similar cost over all

I beg to differ, I couldnt find a lightwieght metal devcon for under $200(Trade) in Nelson,and its enough to do like 10,I only wanted to do one.

It is a bit more costly than some other bedding products but well worth the extra cost, very strong!! Devcon

Ive used Devcon Home plastic steel epoxy, if remember 2500 psi, $20 from local engineer supplies. Enough for 1 rifle.

Used to use Brownells Acraglass Gel but gone off that as I had a couple of jobs where I felt it never cured as hard as I would like. Also opened a brand new pack of it and the resin had gone semi crystaline. Threw it out. Now use Devcon or Marine Tex. This rifle is my baby, it's not one I want to mess up, so it might be easier to get someone else to. Compared to the cost of the whole rifle... $200 is nothing.

A good decision I think. He does a good job and his turnaround time is short. He is listed in the phone book in Lower Hutt I think.
He is also the right guy to run his eye over the gun generally for an accuracy accessment.

Thanks guys. I'll touch base with him and ask some questions. I've spoken to Dan Hardy about it too. Better get my A into G if I want something before Christmas. I've just sold my car finally so I have a bit of dough to get a few bits and pieces done.

Deadeyes use Marinetex $130.00 for bedding job

I've used West Epoxy, Defender's own brand, Marinetex, Devcon, and Brownell's Steel Bed since the late sixties. All worked well when the surface is clean of dust, oils, but roughed up--and the directions were followed, mixed thoroughly, and applied somewhat liberally. All that after a minimum of two coats of release agent or, as on this last job (summer 2012) found me using "Gloves in a Bottle" a dermatological cream that's made to protect skin from harmful chemicals--and that worked the best of all. Good thing too as I bedded that rifle no fewer than six times; I just didn't feel good about my job. It was so bad I thought it impossible--and it was me as I've bedded more M70s than any other--I was thinking that I just couldn't do it anymore. Sure happy now as it's the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. I almost lived my own nightmare--spending as much time in preparation as curing time. However, in the end it was all me; I wanted this rifle done yesterday. So I suppose a good deal of patience, determination, and a desire to do it right is needed too. And the time--undisturbed--to devote to the task.

No doubt I belabored the point, but if one cannot realistically surmount the aforementioned then farming it out may well be the smartest $200 ever spent because if it isn't good it will never shoot good either.
