    Best $1000 budget rifle ??

Got a Grand, got to get a rifle.......which one.
Must be available on NZ market in a calibre 6.5 and above.

    Howa 1500

    Savage Axis

    Ruger American or Predator

    Remington 700 ADL

Any others ? can't be second hand.... well can be but must be as new.

Thoughts, suggestions and reasons please, this could influence my purchase.

I'm a Tikka 6.5 fan. Smooth as silk and insanely accurate.

Howa, Weatherbys are made by them Ive had 2 and they were excellent but the 308 vangard was a tad heavy.
Got a zastava now that is much nicer so consider them too.

Sauer 100 at $1200 would be well worth a look (couple of hundred over budget though). They have a good alloy block bedding system and nice trigger. You should be able to just mount a 'scope and go hunting.

Maybe in 308 'cos ammo is available everywhere and you can get some bargains (like from Belmont).

Howa 1500 would be my pick of the ones you have listed, unless Rem 700's have had their quality control issues sorted, then I'd go Rem 700

$1000 for rifle only or scope included ?

Spend at least as much on the scope as the rifle..., or buy something with open sights

From your list the Howa. Also take a look at the Zastavas and Marlins.

yeah the 5.7lb is the mountain rifle which is $1800~ bare though spudattack.
The HOWA 1500 is bloody heavy but it is a good shooter so for $1k would be your best bet for a new rifle.
Look on TM as you can find some bloody good 2nd hand rifles.

Yes, but you can get the same barrelled action in the hogue stock that is a grand for the scoped package and still only weighs 50g more bare.
    It's called the ranchland.

They are not the heavy beasts they used to be.
    I know, I have a .223 that must weigh around 9lbs.

Marlin, Savage, Howa. All very good shooters.
