    Best 3-9x40 scope under $800?

What does everyone recommend in the above price range(and why please)? Not looking to go much bigger or smaller on scope size. Ideally looking for an all rounder as i'm not sure what kind of hunting I'll be doing yet (it's for my first rifle) hence me thinking a 3-9x40 should do the trick.

leupold......because they are good, solid, reliable and have lifetime guarantee if anything should ever go wrong....all my rifles wear them other than my .22lr which wears a kahles...just because I have it and its too good to leave on shelf.
and 100% spot on with 3x9x40mm

I would consider the 3.5-10vx3i. You should find a non zero lock newish one for that price.

Zeiss terra 3-9 z600 is a good bet. Great glass and useful reticle.
    Leupold vx3 3.5-10
Bushnell elite if you can find one
    Nikon monarch
    Weaver grandslam.
All these you could get for under $800 just be patient on your post and something will come up

Ideally I'd be going new on the scope as i understand warranties only tend to cover original owner?

Why is NZ so behind Europe etc
    40 mm is gone/over unless on a .22
All of Europe are now 56mm

Kiwi's are slow - not only to fly but to move forward
    40mm ????
    So yesterday mate

3-9x is a bit "old school" now as most manufactures use a bigger zoom range than 3x. Nothing wrong with them but 2-10x is also worth a look. Bushnell Elite 4200 2-10x is good for the money as are the Leupolds as others have mentioned.

There's a Howa 1500 308.cerakoted and in one of the lightweight mountain rifle stocks with a 3500 Elite on it for $1100 at HnF Dunedin. Second hand but looks in great condition. I thought that was a pretty good deal especially with the Bushnell elite included

My understanding is that hunting in Europe is a bit different than bush bashing in NZ. A 56mm objective is great for sitting in a tree stand at last light but it does mean more weight and a higher mounted scope. Not what every one wants.

Agreed, pretty impractical for the do it all Kiwi hunter. Also doubt you'd find anything with a 56mm objective at the OPs stated price point of $800 or less.
