Using a wee string line bubble, set the rifle level. Then hold rifle in place with gun vise, clamps, string, sellotape, whatever you've got.

Place the scope in rings and level it using the wee bubble. You may need to take the elevation cap off to find a flat spot. Start the screws to close the rings up but don't torque them up. You'll need to be able to move the scope forward or back with gentle pressure.

Unclamp the rifle, close your eyes and shoulder the rifle into firing position. Open your eyes, if you don't have sight picture slide the scope forward or back as required. (Don't be surprised if the cross hairs look off level. From experience I've noticed right handed shooters tend to tilt the rifle slightly right. As the heel of the stock tucks into the shoulder.)
Repeat the exercise of shouldering the rifle with eyes closed then opening. Making and adjustments forward and back as required. Try really hard not to rotate the scope while doing that.

Torque the rings up and job done.

Bore sighting and then proper zeroing follows on.

I do something very similar except I find out the eye relief first then mark the scope with a bit of tape, then level everything up.

That's why you need to avoid those cheap strap-over Weaver rings like the plague. They're appalling in that regard

Cheers for the info, I'll give it a go myself with the help my mate who's not all too experienced with it but has the kit. I'll try sight it in this weekend as well so if it comes out poorly I'll get in contact @timattalon. thanks

Ahh, we haven’t mentioned lapping the rings..

Forget that- that's why God invented Burris Signatures..

Don’t over tighten the screws.
The ring/mount manufacturers have recommended torque settings , most people just doing it by guessing over tighten , it’s always amazed me how little I have to swing on the driver to reach the correct torque.
A torque driver in inch pounds is highly recommended

Nothing gets a scope as low over the action/barrel as those rings though.
They have their applications .

Just remember when you set your eye relief to do it on highest magnification.

I have fixed that on my .270 after a certain extra tall fellow forum member took the piss out of me about my X hair being not straight.....my 3x M8 is fitted so X hairs are indeed a X now Im first to agree its a mind f#%* sighting it in...but it works for me and the whole horizontal/vertical thing is removed from equation.

Anne and Gerry Pert,I believe it was in one of the hunting books of the 90s describe using a scope this way for bush work...Ive tried it 3 times in past and have gone back to it.....having a bore sighter helps no end to get it zeroed....
