For what purpose, and on what rifle?

Second hand Leupold is a good place to start. Just put a brand new Nikko Sterling FFP scope on the .22mag for shits and giggles. Bloody clear optics and in your price range.

Came here to say this. For a hunting scope at least. The 3.5 - 10 is a good versatile scope also. Can be had close to 800 new

If you look around you can get a Leupold vx3i new for that. Best in that price bracket tbh.

Mate in the naki is about to buy his first rifle, looking at a tikka 243 and will be shooting inside 300m. A second hand vx3 is a good idea I thought but he may be weird about it and want new

Another vote for the vx3i. Had both the 4.5-14 and 3.5-10 and liked them both.

Vx3 is pretty good but have found a brand new bushnell 4500 2.5-10 for 650. Would be hard to beat that. How would vx3 glass compare?

VX3i 2.5-8x36 would be my choice, inside 300m 8 power is heaps with the bonus of a lighter package.

Definitely get the best deal and value 2nd hand. Older model VX3's 3-10 or 4.5 -14, retro fit S1 turret if need to dial, but for 243 under 300m there's no need.
Other options Burris Signature series 3-12x44 (last one I picked cost me $350), or even better if you find one Burris 6X 2-12x44, or Weaver Superslam 2.5 -10, or Bushnell Elite, .... if you're lucky you should get a Kahles 3-9x40 for that $$.

Have had great results with my Sightron Stac 3-16x44 - worth a look - good glass and for the price robust (if a wee bit on the heavy side)... have one currently on a 223
