blued barrels yay or nay and the ins and outs

    hey there everyone
i recently saw a couple decent looking rifles that are 2nd had but have blued barrels. so just wanting to know weather blued barrels are that rust resistance or not and weather you should bother with them. and any other useful information anyone has?

Gday. Some blued things are sort of rust-resistant but some aren't. My old Browning A5 shotty was a PITA for rust on the blueing. It had to have the jebus oiled out of it to stop it.
Others are way more resistant. My "New in 90" winchester lightweight 243 was way less rust attracting than the A5.
Only ever had the one staino rifle-a 10/22 when they first came out in the early 90s and that has been pretty good but from on here I have certainly seen some comments that just like blueing, some staino rifles go rusty if you turn around in the rain whilst others are brilliant.
Ultimately don't be put off by blued barrels. If it's a good deal, grab it.
If its a well used but good nick rifle it may fall into the more rust resistant type. but ultimately it doesn't hurt to have an oily rag handy when you put it away just to make sure.
Proper gun care is the main thing.

I prefer a blued barrel, many deer have been saved by a shiny barrel!
I just spray the blued parts with crc long life and don't have any rust.

I prefer the look of wood and blue....clean it properly and leave LIGHTLY oiled and you will have few issues.

To beat the rust use a light coat of CRC long life. this stuff is just brilliant. The one in the green can.

I have 3 blued rifles that are 31-37 years old, no rust and the blueing is still pretty good.
The only rifle I ever had that got pitting was a stainless barrel.

On multi-day trips take a pull-thru and a oily rag and give a quick wipe each night and you won't have rust issues.

I’m never buying another blued rifle again too much work cleaning and rust prevention in the mountain fog and rain. The last thing after a hard day in the hills back a the tent is cleaning a rifle.

I bush hunt a lot and deer will see both stainless and blued barrels if you move them in front of them. Glass screens of watch’s, GPS and Inreach deer will see easier.

I have an old savage 3b .22 sitting in the safe. The outside of that barrel has had a rusted patina all my life. Who cares, it still shoots as long as the bolt and action is kept clean.
