    bolt fluting...

So, I know its aesthetic... but after getting several quotes for a tikka bolt to be spiral fluted ranging from 100+ gst to 127+ gst, i decided to go for it.. once the next available machinist was doing.a batch, I sent my bolts upto them.

    Anyway..

I received the invoice today from a reputable.company, and the price was astronomical, does 487 for 2x bolts being fluted seem wrong to you.

Did you get a quote from the specific company you went with before you sent it?

That seems about $200 overpriced for two bolts- I think Gunworks is $140 a bolt.

That's what I would of expected... worse case 170 per bolt.... but 246 a bolt is a bit of a kick in the nuts. I thought I got quotes off everyone... but couldnt find the one i ended up sending them to. I hope they are done well and polished for that price.

Didn’t you say you got a quote? I do know of some places being more expensive then others.

YES I think that’s way too much!

To flute a barrel your looking at $300

I’ve had all mine and a few mates bolts fluted by Gunworks for $130

I would definately be questioning that cost... who did the work?

Exactly what I thought... on top of that my brand new titanium shroud was returned with a scratch. Not going to mention names, but a well known company.

Was it the company who are also the agents on a certain premium scope brand ?

How much weight does fluting the bolt take out?

Whatever the bolt weight reduction, the lightness of the wallet would be far greater going by the above :-(

Had my semi-custom T3 bolt fluted when I lived in the US. Chad Dixon @longriflesinc.com did the work for US$45 and its perfect.

I think you are being bent over.

I just got my Howa bolt fluted a few weeks ago for $200. I won't be naming an companies either, but it came back without be deburred. The burrs were so bad that I noticed them immediately after thinking 'why won't my bolt fit into the the action '... so I then had about an hours work to do in deburring, polishing and cold bluing which I was less than impressed with for the money spent.

I also got a quote from Greystone and they quoted $200. Gunworks wouldn't touch it as apparently Howa uses a hardened steel that damages their tooling.
