Used to be a company ( American I think ) that retro fitted Shorttracs ( same mag set up as A-bolts ) to take 10 round drop mags, I remember seeing photo's years ago.
Shoot it, root it & then BBQ it !!!

What's the consensus on the A-Bolt? Good rifle for a newbie looking for something that ensures any problems are with the user and not the equipment?

I like them. They give you a combination of features tough to find elsewhere: Low bolt lift, dedicated short action length, tang safety which locks the firing pin via the cocking piece, able to be top loaded etc. Up to you how much you value these.

Well made and generally accurate. They're not super-light, but certainly not that heavy either dependent on model. Trigger on my M-Bolt is crisp and ~2.2lb after a simple spring change. Trigger on an A-Bolt .22 I tried had a little bit of creep. Maybe they vary?

Just be aware the A-Bolt 3 is different to the old A-Bolt 1 and 2, quality on the AB3 is a significant downgrade from the older A-bolts.

AB3 has a non adjustable trigger where the blade is separate from the actual mech. AB3 has detachable magazines compared to the older floorplate/magazine combo.

No doubt itll shoot straight and they are well priced though. Also look at the Winchester XPR as its pretty much the same rifle with side safety and better trigger.

I've never seen an A Bolt that didn't shoot brilliantly - and they have a nice slim stock where you hold them for carrying as well.

Don't own one, but I was looking for a LH 280 for a long time.
