    Post BSA .220 Long Rifle

    Hi all,

I am helping out a friend who has inherited a BSA that does not have a bolt or magazine, hopefully someone out there can help me. From what I can ascertain:

    - It is stamped Birmingham Small Arms rifle,
    - .220 Long Rifle,
    - Serial number on breech = L3876,
    - Have been advised that it may be a 1908 model?
    - It has a brass butt plate, so could be a "Military Training Rifle" or "Cadet Training Rifle",
    - Bolts from BSA Sportsman 5 and BSA Sportsman 10 do not fit,
    - Magazine from a Sportsman 5 is too big and wrong shape,
    - I don't believe that it is a .303 convert.

    Hopefully the photos are attached.

    Hopefully someone can assist.

It looks like a 'War Office Pattern' training rifle. They were sold commercially and there should be a 'W O Pat.' stamp as part of the company information on the barrel. A bolt will be difficult (not impossible) to find, and a magazine will be very difficult. A curse upon those who remove bolts and magazines from rifles when storing them!

I have one in my collection. It's the single shot version. So I guess no mag to misplace eh?

Ha ha they well an truelly predate the Sportman rifles.

    Have a look here https://www.rifleman.org.uk/War_Offi...ure_Rifle.html

There were several variations including things like whether the butt plate hinged cap hinged up or down. Also different bolts.

It also has LOITGPTFLE stamped on the breech/barrel.

    Anyone know what that means?
