BSA 222, what's it worth?

Hey folks,

My neighbour is an older gentleman who is in the twilight of his hunting career. We have shared the odd hunting story and get on really well. He came over the other day and said that he's not going to be able to hunt much longer and might be looking to move his rifle on. I would love to be able to buy it off him when the time comes.

I have never seen the thing but he tells me it is in mint condition. All I know is that it's a BSA .222 that he absolutely loves. I know it is all condition dependant but what ballpark should I be expecting when we discuss dollars?

Any nudge in the right direction would be great - I'll try get some pics at some point.

@Dorkus BSA made 4 different models of 222 (Hunter, Majestic, Monarch & CF2) and price is dependent on which one of these models it is. A photo will answer all mate.

what ever it is it would be a quality firearm that you wouldn't regret buying quite underrated will do most things its 223 brother will do

What about this
If you (and him) of course agree - put Pics up and we can hold a Auction on it
If it is what I think - it could be well worth it "for him" financially

Just an idea - Admin might not agree but ???

Hunter or Majestic are the most sort after.

Would I be really wrong and saying that a mint bsa would be worth 800 bucks? I've seen some that took ages to sell for 500 bucks on trademe

For what it’s worth; what I’d pay (and I own 3 BSA Hunters in 222 and 22 Hornet; having had an extensive Hunter collection in the past):

- BSA Hunter 222 - good used $800-1200; excellent perhaps $1500; a super mint one that is completely original could come in comfortably at anything up to $2500 - maybe more. Close to new or Philip Holdens personal rifle or whatever, name your price;

- BSA Majestic - similar to the above but slightly less - $950/$1300/$1900;

- BSA Monarch and CF2 - in my view these are really nice but materially inferior/less collectible - $700/$850/1100.

Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder- ditto price to be paid.

From memory it was an old bsa on the trade me good deals thread.

Years ago I have seen a bsa hunter in pristine condition go for more than 2k.
I owned 2, one of them in good condition but with some of the Blueing rubbed and some very small marks on stock and I sold it for $1200 or $1300( don't remember exactly).

Another year earlier with USA Beaver forstock for 1800

The CF2 is a big lump of a rifle that has no personality at all.

I have killed a few roe deer with a stutzen and double set trigger model in 222. CF2 is a big action for that small round.

Correct

I don't like rifles when the action size is generic, ala Tikka. An action built around a cartridge/family of cartridges is far more favourable, aka Sako L461, Howa mini, for a multitude of reasons - size/weight of action, bolt travel.

This will be as much a matter of honour as money.
He won't want you to flick it on for a profit, nor to chop it, put a suppressor or clunky carbon stock on it.
He most likely wants someone to use it well.
See if he needs the money for something or would he like to be kept in rabbits, venison or single malt for a few years ?
Some people see a price of money as a measure of respect, though.

That’s a beautiful piece of wood, who made it?

Have had an offer of $2500 anytime I want to sell my mint Hunter. Hope one of my grandsons looks after it to keep it in current condition

Hahaha year the old roll over stocks were, are a nightmare. Kicked the living daylights out of me:O_O: I just like the action and the set trigger! Always wanted a custom one and now I have @Tahr sure you can buy off the shelf but.......who wants to be like the next cat in the room with another 270;)

How bloody true. Tell that to an 18yr old boy who got sucked in to buy a CF2 270 many many moons ago. Sure it damaged my hearing. A concrete post is lighter. Worst piece of engineering ever designed. Happily go to prison for grinding up into small pieces every one I see.

I'd agree that the CF2 may not be the sleekest or best balanced rifle in the world, but at 8-ish pounds bare rifle (??) that's about the correct weight for a .270 Win.

Combined effort between me and my Gunsmith Bozard & Co I did the checkering and the seven coats of oil he did all the hard yards on barrel fit and stock fit. The walnut was from NZ Gisborne New Zealand Walnut | NZ Walnut – Gun and Rifle Blanks Supplier, New Zealand

It’s been fun I’m still tinkering with a few bits and bobs. Had the magazine and follower cerakote as well as the trigger plate. Had the magazine floor plate blued along with the follower. Got the bolt jewelled (makes it really slick to operate) lapped the bolt head myself.
Not that much needed doing there just a slight even up. Still had contact on both sides just a small hollow on one side.
Triggers did nothing left them as is. These ones are really good! In fact the set trigger is very light. You get on target set breathe out hold touch and it’s gone.
Then once it was all back and the above lot was sorted I pillar bed it with a couple of cross bolt shafts and the full length bedded it with some of Nathan Fosters bedding kit!
With the red dot sight on at driven boar it handles like a shotgun. But that’s down to Phill (The Gunsmith) and stock design and fit. This was the most painstaking of the whole episode. I copied a forend of a wooded 700. The pistol grip came from the Price of Wales design and the check peace was all done by eye.
I think there must have been four fittings back and forward just for that lot.
If you are going down this road, then my advice is find a gunmaker and stocker that you get on with!
Also write down all that you want in numbered points. Talk and make sure that you are on the same page. Not all of your ideas will be realistic :wtfsmilie::ORLY: took me a bit to get my head around that one. But communication was key here. Then last but not least patience bucketloads of the stuff! For example seven coats of oil for that best finish not three and shel be right mate:x_x:

yep when it’s done right it’s great

There is also a model called Regent Featherweight, that brings the number to 5 different 222 models

Update -

I finally laid my eyes on it, and unfortunately it's not in very good condition. There's lots of pitting on the outside of the barrel. I couldn't really tell what the inside was like, but I'd imagine not great.

I don't know what model it is (or how to tell). I'll post some pics shortly.
