Thread: Burris 4-16x50mm Eliminator III or a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm

Question Burris 4-16x50mm Eliminator III or a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm

Looking to upgrade the scope on my Tikka 7mm RM (in process of working up a load with ELD-X 162g)
Presentably have a 3-9x40 Burris Full Field II (368gms) - which I struggle with over 300m
Presently hunt Urewera's and Kaimai's so weight is a consideration Eliminator 861gms vs VX5 538gms
Hoping to get out on some private farms in the future.
Work does a lot of business and shipping to and from the States so would likely buy there.

My original choice was the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm - as its relatively lightweight and has customizable turrets CDS-ZL2 at $1,399 NZD

But the Burris 4-16x50mm Eliminator III has dropped in price to $1,399 NZD which would save me buying a Range finder or RF Binos ~$500 (so apparent cost being $850 NZD)

Making it a considerably cheaper option.

    Concerns:
    1. Optical quality clearly isn't as good on the Eliminator
    2. Will I regret the extra 330gms and extra 5cm length on the first walk in.
    3. Is 4x to much for in the bush (shoot eyes open and find 3x ok to locate close targets)
    4. Reliability how will the electronics handle the inevitable - bush bashing, dropping, rain, rivers etc

Note: I would need to get a Picatinny rail or scope rings depending which way i go, similar cost/weight

Pics for compare on a Tikka - Both look Huge

The Eliminator seems like a lot of scope to lug around for the off chance at a longer range shot. I'd go with a lighter dialable scope which will see you right for those shots under 300, and you then dial for distances over that. My advice would be get a decent RF bino rather than a bino RF combo. I picked up my Leica RF Bino for $1300 second hand, not all the bells and whistles, but plenty for my needs.

Are you the person who asked about them in a Facebook group the other day and had a shit load of feedback about why not to get one?

For the hunting you do, and the price you can get it, VX5hd 3-15 all the way, maybe with Windplex for later on? Good for bush and some extended range:
Mate has the eliminator on his 7mm mag, and while not my cup of tea, it is quick and accurate out to quite far without too much thought, but 95% is of his hunting is open country/extended range - it’s no bush scope.
    Cheers

    No not me.

Though was really expecting the cheaper, more convenient Eliminator to be the better option.

@Vandros your first photo is of a 3-15x56, a 44mm objective is significantly smaller. FWIW I would be choosing the Leupold, no question
