Burris Signature HD 3-15's first day out.

So I imported one of these at a very good price. Stuck it onto my 18" barrel 7-08 Sako A7 shooting (at the moment) 139 SST at 2.8K (using R17). Previously had a 2-12 VX6 on it but things were beginning to look a bit small and the reticle was a bit thick - still a great 'scope though. So I have been replacing my scopes with a minimum of top end 15 power.

    Initial thoughts...

As bright and clear as the VX6, but the target's 1" red dot looks bigger (12x compared to 15x). Thats a bonus for old eyes.
Field of view seems slightly less at 12x than the VX6 but I doubt it will bother me.
It has a nice fine(er) duplex reticle and I can actually hold on the centre of the dot - the VX6 sort of covered it.
Ergonomics like getting in behind it and eye relief are all good.
The turrets have firmer clicks than the VX6's cds. It has zero stop, and pull up to rotate turrets - this is good. Like the Zeiss Z5. Very cool.
The turrets have slight play - like, wobble, but only when at rest and not when using.
I haven't set the zero stop yet but it looks simple enough.
The parallax dial is firm, and precise.

I bore sighted it before I went out and I fired one shot at about a 20 yards target and it was about an inch high, and central enough.
Back to 100 yards and fired 2 shots. 7" high high
Adjusted 7 MOA down and fired another shot - taking into account human error and MOA compared to inches it was spot on. Dialled up 1.75 Moa (where I wanted it). Single shot was spot on.

Fired at new target dot. 2 shots.Spot on. Bloody marvellous!

Its now all set up for an overnighter with the grandson during the school holidays next week.

Here are the targets. I'm impressed and it will do me.

2 shots 7' high, dialled down 7moa. Single shot. Then dial up 1.75moa. Single shot.

Got the same one as you Tahr and for the money i think they are a hard act to beat . And as far as being tough enough . A recent fall which resulted in a broken arm and a couple of ribs and didnt move it's point of aim one bit . I dont recommend this type of test. I have no hesitation in recommending them though

Tahr, how do you find the outer ring view, i.e. does it have a tire or tunnel effect as some scopes do?

Ive just compared it to other scopes that I have (Zeiss, Swarvo, Tract, Delta). On average the Burris black ring is a smidgen thicker but there isn't any tunnelling.
It stacks up pretty well in all respects really.

Yeah I have the 2-10 and I rate it very highly. Great reticle and agree re being very fine in the centre. Would like a little bit more zoom but covers 95% of my hunting. Turrets are really good, no parallax issue, good eye relief and as stated no real tunneling. Definitely no scope in the same price bracket

I have two mates looking for scopes with those specs, how does it compare to the Zeiss and Swaro at last light ?. Can you still see through it as well as through Binos ? - always a bugger if an animal can be seen in the binos but not through the scope.

Looking at some fallow on dusk the other evening at 470m and could see them clear as just wanted a bit more zoom. Could make out as much detail with my scope as I could my steiner 10x binos.

    @Moa Hunter

So I just did a 6pm test. On the front verandah looking into bush at 300 yards. Target was a whiteish cabbage tree trunk and its darker bushy top.

Scopes were a Zeiss HD5, Swarvo Z5, Tract Toric and the Burris HD. All 42 or 44mm objective lenses. I tested all of them on 5 power.

The first to lose shooting type definition of the cabbage tree head was the Burris at 5.50pm. Then the Tract and Zeiss at 6pm and the Swarvo 6.05.

At 6.10 I couldn't see the trunk through the Burris well enough to shoot (just a slight smudge - but not shootable). I could see the trunk only just good enough to shoot at 6.10 with the Zeiss and the Tract.
At 6.10 the Swarvo was still strong on the trunk and quite shootable.

The Swarvo has always suited my eyes well, and seems to be strong on picking up light colour shades like the cabbage tree trunk. The difference in the shooting window between the Swarvo and Burris was 20 minutes. The Zeiss and Tract fell in between. The margin between the Burris, Tract and Zeiss was quite small but still noticeable.

I didn't use my Tract 8x42 binos as well, but I know from experience that they and the Tract 'scope are near enough comparable in regards to shooting light - with a slight edge to the binos.

Overall I'm happy with the Burris - in a real hunting situation with all the variables chucked in I doubt the margin between the scopes I tested would be so great.

I will do the same test between the VX6 and the Burris too - but it will be in a few days 'cos I have hunting to do.
