lots of choice really - some of the earlier stuff worth a look to - Remington model seven Winchester lightweight - have a soft spot for the Miroku Levers - but I would never ever sacrifice some range just to have a short bush rifle - one can get 250-300 yard shots across gullys onto slips etc and ya cant do that with a 150 yard rifle - lots of rifles around that one could cut back and can and shoot 300 yards easily - accuracy trigger handling all still must apply

I've got one of these in 308., it was $2600 when I got the package a few years ago. The new fluted ones look nice too.

Shoots great out the box and can shoot comfortably out to 250m as is, durable and hardy in the bush.

Remember in this case the OP wants something “cheaper than a Tikka” and he already has a medium varipower scope. It has to tolerate dirt and rain well.

Quality always wins. Tikka is quality. Why compromise. 2C.

Go to your local Gun Shops and have a look at the secondhand stock. I know in Invercargill there would probably be 50+ suitable rifles. Benefit of this is that you get to shoulder the rifle, you may find what you want already done, gunsmith may offer to shorten to shift the stock and you never know what may take your fancy.

I resist that urge, I really really do, last time I went wife asked me if I was taking the trailer...

I know a lot but it seems less every day...

Due to the exorbitant cost of reloading components, warning shots will not be given.

Given that the Tikka action is long enough for a 7mmRemMag it immediately has a 1” length handicap for a bush rifle. Another 2C

I really like this idea. A second hand should be 2/3 the price of new so you step up a level in quality.
Seeing as its your rainy day short range backup rifle its not so critical if there was a minor fault like a hidden ring bulge or burred screw slot.
What you see is what you get will be fine and you get to feel them all.

If it’s only a bush gun, any cheap second hand ss rifle will do the job. Remington, Howa, etc etc doesn’t have to be super accurate, but most factory rifles are pretty good these days anyway. Some thing with a faster twist so you can sling some heavies lead tips around if you wanted, although after seeing the .223 thread in here, anything from there up to whatever caliber would be sweet.
Grab a DPT. Tried and trusted all over this forum, good support locally, not that I’ve ever seen one fail. Plus you can give them a decent clean.
