If your hell bent on 30 cal a 30-284 as veitancam said would be just the ticket . 30-06 performance
For short range un very short barrel : 338 Federal

For Sambar and at least some availability of (but often expensive) ammo I reckon its worth looking at a 300 WSM. even at 18" they hum along bloody well and recoil is fine out of a suppressed tikka
But if you want to shoot a bit more and run factory ammo it is hard to go past a 308
You'll get so many opinions on here mate. dont over think it too much. all of the above cals will get the job done but you do want some energy on target if you are pushing past 300m with a short barrel
