Thread: Bushpig/Superpig build

Afternoon all

After some discussions on here and with Greg Duley I have decided to do the tikka bush pig or super pig build. I want to leave Greg alone as much as I can as I'm sure he's a very busy man and so after a bit of advice from the experts on here.

My predicament is whether to go with a 308 bush pig and 16" barrel or Greg mentioned we could do a super pig in either 284, 7mm saum or 7mm R.E.M. Mag. Now I'm not too savvy when it comes to long range calibres and have only ever used 30 cal, mainly because of the Sambar I often take. I've done a bit of a search and seems that the 284 is the way to go over the other two?

Are these calibres capable of knocking over Sambar? Ive never shot anything over probably 300 yards but I thought if I were to do this I would only want to do this once and to have the versatility of shooting out to 600 yards could be of great benefit. From what I can gather the main difference of cost would be to change the barrel and of course the cost of ammo, as I don't do any reloading. Is it worth going all out with a carbon barrel or are the Remington barrels all good?

Other question is if I go the super pig should I look at swapping the schmit and bender for a z3 with the ballistic turrets?

Not sure on the calibre Question regarding the above @HB. But I guess one of your areas of contemplation for a bush / super pig is the optic and Both @thar and I are raving over our Sightron stac 2.5-16's and might be worth consideration given its under a grand worth at Reloaders

To me robust more than enough to take the bush shite, 30mm tube for light gather and the magnification values work well long and shortish distances too! I've got the MOA3 reticle which means either holdover or dial are options.

Currently living on my Tikka 7mmRem mag and has become a bit of a everything hunting rifle. So may be applicable to your plight!

Tube diameter determines the amount of adjustment not the light gathering ability of a scope. The objective lense diameter is the biggest determining factor for light gathering. Go for a 50mm lense in the bush if possible.

You're exactly right @300_BLK not light transmission - " my bad" but to me it had a far better depth of field and compared to my vortex heaps better in low fading light.

But you're right not exactly a apples for apples comparison. But definitely more dial. Was a real find for me anyhow.

They look like good scopes !

I've shot sambar stags with 308 and 7mm Rem Mag, they both killed the same.

If you are a 30 cal man and are interested in a bit longer range I would go 300WSM.

For short range un very short barrel : 338 Federal

Based on your requirements then I would go with the 308

If you do not reload, you can effectively rule out 7mmSAUM & 284 - availability of ammo is scant to nil. If you are hooked on 30 cal - consider a 300WSM?
But as @MassiveAttack has already said - a 308 will do all you want & be a heap cheaper to run...

+1 for the 16" 308 if you are after a bush pig.
I think you are asking a bit much of one rifle though if you want a short and handy rifle and something that has the energy to knock over a Sambar at 600 yards. Short and light and high powered means big recoil and there is only so much velocity you can ring from a short barrel.

I have a t3 that has barrel cut to 17 inch, gunworks rechambered from 7mm08 to 284win.

Fit the LA mag and bolt stop, Dpt suppressor job done and very cheaply too, don't see the need to fork out big money to get a spendy custom rifle builder to do it all.

I run the 162 Amax at 2740 fps and that holds 1000 ft lbs to 850-900 yards. I've shot 6 inch gongs at 640 yards and wouldn't hesitate shooting deer at 600 yards

I'd go superpig 20in bbl, 300wsm or 300saum

284win mate run the 150gran corlocks for samber and it will smoke them, be running around 3k in 17" barrel

Wow. That's good velocity from a 17" barrel. What powder are you using?
