    Buying advice - Ruger 10/22

Hi folks, im looking for some advice. Im just getting into some basic shooting and am loving it so its time to buy my first rifle. Ive decided on a Ruger 10/22 and am looking for a package with scope, silencer and possibly the Hogue stock. Can anyone recommend the best place to buy? After some homework it seems that Gun City isnt maybe the best place to buy?

    Im based in Wellington.

Call me old fashioned but I'd suggest your first rifle be a bolt action. It'll help you develop safety skills and your hunting mates should feel more comfortable around you while you get your discipline sorted. Learn and use the half-bolt carry etc. A bolt gun aligns much more easily with the safety rules. It'll also teach you to make that important 1st shot count. There are some lovely B/A .22's around, can't go wrong with Anchutz, CZ/BRNO etc.

Have a look at the Marlin 795 as well, I've had both and prefer the Marlin. 10/22 is still a nice rifle.

Shot with a new 10/22 the other weekend and it was nice and shoots well, but I can see why people say to get a replacement trigger for them!!

JW15 as a first rifle. Accurate, reliable, cheap.
10-22 - burns ammo and needs fair amount of servicing to keep functioning.

Theres no houge stocked ones at the importers at this time . They have more due mid Feb .

I tried to order some on thurs from them .Got some takedowns instead and back ordered the houges for when they arrive.

Most shops will be around the same price. Shop around and see who you like and who gives you good service .

I'm not going to try to talk you out of a semi auto, but my first rifle was a semi auto and it took me a LONG time to break the bad habits I formed

The 10/22 is a good gun. I've got a dunger (something is wrong with it at the moment) but mine has taken many many hundreds (if not over 1,000) of bunnies since I first got it.

A 10/22 barely needs any servicing to keep functioning. You can fire thousands of rounds without any malfunctions, then you just take the bolt out, get in there with a little action cleaner and a toothbrush, and it's back to brand new. Takes ten minutes. But yeah you'll chew through ammo (part of the reason I ordered a lever action for my plinking).

You'll only be disappointed with a JW15. Been there, done that. If you want something that looks like a CZ clone... get a CZ.

Thanks for all the advice folks. It sounds to me like it might be worth having a shoot with a mates bolt action and see how that feels. I am keen though not to buy something that I then want to upgrade within a short period so would rather not go too basic to start. I wonder if I could get away with buying a 10/22 and a bolt action......!

I've got a 10/22 and they are a good gun but the trigger is heavy. I dropped in a Timney aftermarket trigger but it cost a bomb - there was an earlier thread somewhere around here about trigger lightening.
.22 ammo is cheap as chips and Rugers are great for possuming too.

Perhaps if you want to get into varminting you could get a longer range specialist rifle for that later in a more appropriate calibre and keep the 22 for possies, bunnies and plinking.

Then you'll be wanting a shotgun for ducks, a hunting rifle for deer and thar, a semi-auto for mobs of goats, you get the idea

If you want a semi I'd go for this over a 10/22. They tend to be a lot more accurate and you don't need to spend the same money again on it just to make it work as it should have from the factory. To lighten the trigger on the Marlin normally only takes one floppy and 10min, 5 of those minutes finding where the floppy spring went to when you broke it open. The money you'll save on the Marlin over a 10/22 will get you an old JW15 and they can shoot very well indeed.
