    Call me old fashioned but I'd suggest your first rifle be a bolt action. It'll help you develop safety skills and your hunting mates should feel more comfortable around you while you get your discipline sorted. Learn and use the half-bolt carry etc. A bolt gun aligns much more easily with the safety rules. It'll also teach you to make that important 1st shot count. There are some lovely B/A .22's around, can't go wrong with Anchutz, CZ/BRNO etc.
