Calibre for over a Deer Dog

    Gidday

A cobber is after a bolt action rifle to shoot suppressed over a pointing dog in the bush. He's got the usual 308, 270 and 223 but doesn't think they are as quiet as he'd like.

We have been discussing the likes of the 300 BLK and 7.62x39 and I wonder about a 44 Mag.

He doesn't reload yet either so thats a big limiting factor. He's a very capable dog trainer and hunter, just not a gun nut!

    Any thoughts.

my setter will duck behind me when the rifle comes up. Suppressed 243.
Still not good for dog ears in front of the muzzle.
I guess if he dose not reload he is stuck with something that offered factory subsonics for the short range stuff.
For the longer shots the dog is probably not pointing and he would have to hand feed in a fast round.
Would still be limited to 150-200 mtr depending upon which he way goes.
    300 whisper or 35 (38 or 357) or 45 cal pistol type.

Suppressed 300 AAC the new Hornady sub sonic 190 Ammo shoots well in my AR but won't cycle yet, not a problem for a bolt gun.

    Hah. I know nothing.

My dog doesn't seem to mind the noise, but I have never fired an un-supressed rifle with her. I use up to short magnums with her but always suppressed. I've never noticed her retreat when I've been about to shoot, but I am always conscious of where she is and call her in if she's going to be in the muzzle blast. She comes in close to my legs if I quietly click my tongue.

Interestingly though she has taken a dislike to being in photos with deer. I have to kid or drag her into the pic and make her sit. I think that its the flash on the camera that she doesn't like.
    They are complex gadgets, dogs.

I used to have a huntaway that would walk backwards to me when she winded a deer. It became my way of knowing there was something close, but it was her way of protecting her ears.

(sorry @7mmwsm but......) so do you reload this dog and what powders do you use? do you pull the tail out squeeze the balls. When long rang do you dial the ears!

    @Tentman.
Belmont make a factory subsonic round for 308 , but I am not sure what the projectile is. Maybe a FMJ, which would not be the best for hunting

    Re the 7.62x39 subs
I have some subsonic that I will be asking a FM about
I finally got around to sighting in my Baikal 7.62x39 yesterday and fired a couple of the Subs after the factory rounds - was approx 1/2 in lower at 40m that the factory 139g - which I expected would be the case
They go off about the same as a "cap gun"
Its laughable - no BS - just like a cap gun
Perfect for firing directly over a Dog
I used GSP dogs in 80's and deafened 2 with 270/243/308 and 223

Are these Subs good enough to knock over animals - they sure the hell do not sound it ??
Will talk with man who loaded and sold me the Baikal and see what he says - but projectile went out of sight into a Pinus Radiata behind target

sarvo..I reload 151grn hp cast at subsonic speeds in the x39. Ive shot about 10 of my own sheep with them now so have fair idea on what they will do (and wont) I would happily shoot goats/wallabies with them and fallow broadside on..... bailed pigs be piece of cake. suppresssed .223 is great over dog. so is full power 7.62x39mm. one thing to be aware of with subs...if you miss and they hit something solid they BOUNCE off into distance with a whizzzzzzz. miss vitals by an inch and animal will walk away. they like an arrow. plenty of hole but no punch.

If Dog is pointing/indicating - not sure how you can avoid firing over Dog
