Thread: Camo spray job for stock

I’m in the process of building a Paulonia+CF stock for my REM M7. Decided to take the old factory stock and tart it up with a camo paint job using rattle cans. Tried of few different techniques and ended up with this.

Took a couple of pics next to some native on edge of garden.
Top photo is half in & half out of sunlight, the 2nd one in the shade. Seems to be quite effective pattern - well to human eyes.

that's a cool looking pattern, what did you use to get the black spots? a couple of clear coats will make it wear better also

Yep, bang on - yet to apply clear coat. Still have to do the other side of stock first. LOL.
To create spot patterns I made a couple of templates, one out of a small (6” long) piece of Kydex and one from plastic ice cream container lid. Then I drilled random holes with a couple of different size drill bits. Tried to create a disruptive pattern. Then hold the pattern over the work area & give it squirt with rattle can. Best effect seems to be 1 or 2 quick squirts so you get variation in paint density. Also if the template is on a slight offset angle to stock surface you get a blurring or shadowy effect. The black stands out but there are green, khaki , brown & cream spot patterns as well.
Layers create complexity

Thanks MD - surprised myself how well it turned out. Started off like the videos on YouTube spraying random stripes of green, khaki & brown. Then some overlays with cream or khaki using a bit of ponga frond, then dots in green, brown and then black.

What spray cans did you use?

Way to go Pete looks grouse make sure you use a matte clear if you must clear coat, personally I perefer not to use a clear at all as even the matte has a bit of shine in direct sun in my experience. I'm happy enough to touch up my stocks if they get worn.....hasn't been necessary yet

Top job. The only thing I know about pawlonia is that its very light, how stong is it compared to something like walnut?

The green, brown and khaki are Rustoleum brand camo or matt. The black and cream were some other brand.

completely different....closer to balsawood than anything else.... its strong enough,but I wouldnt want to use it too roughly,would be easy enough to put serious dent in it.

As @mickyDuck has stated it’s soft, while being very strong and amazingly light. Compared to walnut which is hard and strong. Hence the use of CF and epoxy to wrap the stock giving extra strength and hard finish. There’s a few threads on here about paulownia stock builds that are well worth a read.
