Can i lighten my sako 75

    G'day,

Still torn on what to do rifle wise.

Just wondering, my sako 75 7mmRM is 3.6 kg bare.

Is there any way to get it to around 2.8-2.9kg?

All i can think of is fluting and a carbon fibre stock but I don't know if that'll shave enough or if financially it'd be worth it.

    Thoughts?

A carbon fibre stock will weigh about 600g, usually saves a pound on a wood stock Sako 75. Not sure what a synthetic Sako 75 stock weighs. Barrel fluting won't save as much, but cost as much either.

I'll weigh my stock tonight. Is synthetic mind you.

    I feel like it's a lost cause.

Been trying to sell her for $1650 with a break, been crowned and bedded and had no interest, I don't feel like I'm offering up a rough deal.

Pretty much, so that takes off say 250gm. What would barrel fluting shave? 300gm?

I don't think you will save that much fluting, maybe half that?

At a geuss you'd only save 60 or so grams fluting it as the barrel isn't that heavy to start with..

Ive just had a 22" factory barrel (Mod 7 7SAUM) fluted with 12 thin width flutes and the weight saved was only 123 gram, I guess a few little savings all add up, but its very expensive way to reduce weight, more of a cosmetic thing really. I also had bolt fluted and handle skelotinised and lightweight alloy nob fitted (total weight reduction of bolt was just 36 grams) so once again very expensive weight reduction.

I also changed from Steel two piece bases and steel rings, to one piece Talley rings, which saved another 62grams.

As opposed to the 577 grams i saved with Stug's Carbon stock (factory mod 7 plastic stock was over 1,100grams. Far bigger weight saving and far, and $ per gram saved far cheaper.

To really save weight you need to move to a lighter cartridge eg 308 and shorter barrel. Then you can ditch the muzzle brake too and get a smaller lighter scope and internal magazine. Can you afford to step down in range, power and useability ?

That's been the plan, I'd rather not own a gun than a 308 though . Just haven't been able to move this one on.

I'm set on a 30-06, I wouldn't consider it a step down. Out to my ranges (500m ish) it's virtually ballistically the same as a 7mmRM
