Can a visiting hunter hire a supresser?

    Hi guys

Dont know if anyone caters to this, but thought Id ask. I am planning to visit from Australia in the next 12 months with my son. The plan at this stage is to hunt in the Canterbury region, but most other details are still up in the air at this stage.

In Aus of course suppressers are highly regulated. Having used them in a few other countries, we would love to be able to hunt suppressed in NZ. Do any of the gun shops in the south island rent out suppressers? That seems like it would be the only way for a visitor to get one on a temporary basis.

Don't know of rentals, you could call Gunworks in CHCH and ask but I haven't heard of such a thing before
For the sake of a few hundred bucks, just buy one and then sell when you leave would be easier

Resell it on this forum for $100 less than purchase price works out like renting one anyway.a month old suppressor with less then hundred rounds through it will sell easily enough with that sort of price reduction.

Good suggestions above or buy and get someone to look after it for you ready for the next trip.

Hi this sounds like a bot-generated post. Mashing together highly replied to concepts of rifle rental and suppressor info.

What rifle are you using ?
Bringing your own, threaded or borrowing / buying one here ?
All good to try a new opportunity while on holiday: above advice is constructive especially buy then sell.
Suppressors are quite personal - need to be fitted to the rifle theyre used on . We assume factory threadings are well done enough but Id get a new suppressor check by a gunsmith ( centrefire anyway).

1st part has already been said but best option is to buy one from gunworks.

As Bageera has observed, it’s not necessarily plug and play.

To minimise potential for disappointment, you would want to order and pay for the suppressor(s) in advance. Note that some fitting might be required especially if the suppressor is an overbarrel and needs a bushing made to suit your rifle (I am unfamiliar with Gunworks suppressors, so someone else may be able to advise here). If it does need a bushing machined, you can measure your barrel diameter at the bushing point with calipers, supply this information ahead of time so the bushing is ready to go. There are also variations in muzzle threads which might mean some work is required on the day. If you can do so, ideally see if you can book an appointment so your job isn’t added to the queue after you have landed.

Once you’re suppressor is fitted, you will need to re-zero your rifle, it will probably be shooting about 6-9 inches low at 100yd, and may have some windage variation too.

Selling your second hand suppressor with less than 50 rounds fired will be the easy part.

Your other option as opposed to selling would be to leave it with a trusted local for future trips. It would shortcut most of the above for next time around. If you’re really clever, you can even dial back to your ‘suppressed zero’ before leaving Australia.

    Hi guys

Thanks for the suggestions. I dont thing buying and selling will work as I will only be in NZ for a short time. Though if I had the purchase already lined up before I arrived, I guess I could have it sold in advance and just hand it over at the end of the trip.

I only know a couple of people in NZ, but may be able to make some arrangement to leave it in NZ. That would actually be my preference really. Just a matter of seeing if I can make it work.

That would be the idea, you would want everything lined up before arrival and somewhere to leave it when you go. Know that if you are leaving it here for next time, handing it over in person, there is no paperwork required and the custodian doesn’t need to have a FAL.

The last bit is not right, a suppressor can not be in the possession of someone who does not have valid firearm licence. Same for a rifle stock, trigger, barrel ,magazine .

I live about 20 minutes south of the Auckland Airport and am happy to store/post for you if you decide to sell it on here or use it next time you come back. Just let me know.
