Thread: Which Carbon Bipod?

Hi team,

I'm currently running a Sako Finnlight 2 rifle with a Harris Swivel Bipod (not sure of the exact model). I'm keen to reduce the weight of my rig and also help address how front-heavy the rifle is with the Harris fitted so looking at a Carbon Bipod option. I've done some searching and have read some posts on here and it seems that both the Backlanz and Spartan Bipods have their fans.

I'm keen to hear from anyone who has upgraded from a Harris to something Carbon. Which one did you go for, was it worth the money and are you happy with your purchase?

Pondering this exact question myself.
I prefer to shoot over a day pack but It's always mostly empty prior to shooting something and don't really want to stuff it with stuff just to fill it up on day trips.

Run a Spartan Javelin, works very well, very light and easy to take on/of quickly. Being able to carry rifle without bipod attached is a big plus, especially in tight scrub. Not sure the weight saving is going to help much with your front heavy issue. Probably better served by carry with suppressor removed.

This wont sell you a new carbon bipod, but may save you a dollar. I carry my Harris separately and where i can get it quickly if needed, in a pocket on my daypack. So its off hand for close, daypack for mid range and i fit the bipod if its 250M+ shots. I have a big knurled nob on the bipod attachment screw so you can add it pretty quickly.

I have tried both but prefer the javelin spartan myself, I also like the fast on fast off of the javelin. I have heard that the new backlanz is better with tighter tolerance than the original carbon and therefore less play (that was my one criticism of the backlanz).
At the end of the day they are both great units, I just don't know if the backlanz is worth 2x the cost of the javelin.
The only other criticism is that the javelin really require the flush cup bedded into the fore to get the best fit and to be able to load the bipod up, this is not a difficult job just a hassle.

The Backlanz carbon bipod is a sweet hunting bipod. Ethan has just released the V2 upgrade too. Easy on/off, lightest of them all (crazy light), has spikes and rubber feet, can be forward loaded and swivel or used neutral. Legs can be folded fully forward like a Harris so you can leave it on rifle and carry it. They can also be set in a range of different positions back to the traditional 90 degree position. Have been lucky enough to play with both Backlanz and Spartan and the Backlanz is my pick, awesome design. Biggest downfall is the price.

Their non carbon standard bipod like Ive got seems to have disappeared from their offering? Are they discontinued?

I had a spartan on my finlight 2 very light just kept it in my pocket.
Got to take a shot at a fallow stag and had to move abit to one side and just moved the rifle to one side and the bloody leg kept folding up.
I didn't like having one fixed leg and one folding.
You can't leave it on the rifle either and the padlock lever doesn't hold firm.
Anyway I sold it and went back to my Atlas which I still use, it's way stronger and quick and easy to remove.

I’m not sure about his other standard bipods sorry. I don’t think the Version 2 is reflected on the website yet either as he just announced it on social media the other day.

I just bought one of the backlanz carbon bipods. the weight (lack of) is great. The leg locks seem to work ok, but I'm not convinced about tilt and pan. This seems to rely on the spring thats used to lock the unit on the stub and the unit just feels like its not properly fixed onto the stub.

once you load it up to shoot it feels ok. Only used it once so far so will give it a bit more time to see how it goes long term

I've got a Backlanz carbon bipod in as new condition I will sell if anyones keen on one $550 posted. Comes with the bipod, mounting bracket & case.

100% amazing piece of kit, Mine is heading in for the upgrade to the new heavier spring.

Backlanz all day!! I had the spartan and changed to a backlanz.
The biggest thing for me was the simple fact you couldn't fold the legs up.

In a hunting situation you have your rifle in your hands and your pack on, with your spartan bipod in your pack (because it doesn't fold up) walking along then you want to glass a face so first thing you do it put your rifle down on the ground. get your bipod out of your pack to put on the rifle (which means you have to take your pack off) then once you've finished glassing you take your bipod off the rifle put the rifle on the ground, scratch the scope or it falls onto the ground because you have leaned it against something you told yourself you should be leaning it on. then put your pack back on and pick up your rifle.

For a backlanz its folded up on the rifle, you fold the feet down and start glassing, once done pick it up and fold them forward and your off.

This was the main thing for me
and its lighter
and its nz made

I've had the Harris, Neopod, and Spartan. The Harris swivel pod is fantastic, just not so nice to carry. The Neopod was too floppy. The Spartan would be my current pick of the three - very quick to get on and off.

I contacted Backlanz and confirmed their improved bipod would be delivered if I ordered. I will write up a review after I receive it.
