I pretty much don't maintain them at all, except for running a few patches down the bore now and then. They can be set up for LR with the right components. I'm planning on developing two loads for my Rock River carbine. A cheapish, generic hunting load for when it's wearing the Redfield 3-9 and a high BC load for reaching out further, when I decide what optic I want to use for that. Sorry if I misunderstood your post.
I don't get into the bush all that much, so it would get used at the range mostly. By LR i mean (eventually) 600+ I understand a .308 ar would do that, but no where near as accurately as a accurised rem for instance. I have a saiga in .223 it gets used and abused a lot, an ar would be the same, but for me an ar just wouldn't get enough use to justify it. In saying that if I were to take up service rifle, or military style shooting matches I'd buy one instantly, and who knows in a few years i might look at 3 gun, or similar? then I will get one, just right now, a 7mm mag rem 700 is a more practical firearm.
